Townie
My son-in-law does the occasional clay bashing with me and I lend him my ancient 686. He's getting a nasty bruise on his shoulder which I think is down to him being tall and moving the stock up to his cheek to compensate, which results in the toe giving him a dig. Even happens with 21g cartridges. Has anyone tried a slip on comb raiser? He doesn't shoot enough to justify anything permanent or semi-permanent which would mark the woodwork. I like the 686 and don't want to replace it.
wymberley
Could that bruise be on the top of his arm rather than in his shoulder?
Townie
I thought that too, but definitely in his shoulder.

Only asked as a bruised arm is far more common. Yep, various makes of slip ons are available and they do work. Best to remove between uses. Westley
I would try a 'slip on' stock extender too. I use a Beretta comb raiser, it is a gel type rubber affair, which can be put on or removed at will, all without marking the stock too. IF you use a stock extender, remember to remove it between uses. I can alter the colouring of the stock if left on. If you are in the North West, you are welcome to borrow both stock extender and comb raiser to try. Townie
That's very kind of you Westley. We're in the south east unfortunately. I've got a stock extender and I'll give that a try.

Westley
There is also a neoprene 'sleeve', I think it is by 'Beartooth', that allows you to fit different thicknesses of closed cell foam on top of the stock and the sleeve keeps them in place. They are not expensive.
HantsRob
I had the same issue with my 686. Turns out it was gun mount being the issue. Either I've adjusted to the gun, or wasn't mounting straight. Certainly doesn't hurt looking at comb height and stock length though.

I agree, but how high do you need the stock to be ? 1/8" is adding a fair bit to the comb. I still believe the Beretta gel pad raiser is good, although it can alter the cast slightly. Alternatively a 'Blue Peter' job with card/foam and electricians tape works OK.
