A Black Powder Hammer Gun Question ? Please.

Having just bought another gun I have now got an old gun that is surplus to requirements as I need the space in my gun cabinet , the gun is a Midland Gun Company , Hammer gun , Black powder with damascus steel barrels that I doubt is in proof and to be honest it would make a good wall piece but that would be about it .

The question is , apart from handing it in to the police , could I sell it ? , could I put it an auction , is it worth having it deactivating or could I give it away to a s g c holder ?

surely the starting point is to find out if it is in proof! You might then get some interest. If someone wanted to give me an in proof hammergun, assuming it is not rattling I would have it and am sure there are other like minded souls a little nearer than SW Scotland.

How much does it cost to check if it is proof and how much is the gun worth?

It's my understanding you can gift an out of proof gun. I have also seen out of proof guns in auctions with the auctioneer stating they will only sell to an RFD. Obviously there may not be any there or any that would want the gun.

I would be very surprised it was still in proof Dave , our nearest gun smiths is about 30 miles away , I don't think it would warrant to do a 60 mile return trip to take it and leave it there and then then the same to go and pick it up plus the cost of checking it over as all I wanted know if it was legal to give away :hmm:

That is the thing , side by sides are not in demand at the best of times and would a dealer want a run of the mill worn out Black powder hammer gun , also if I took the gun to the auction it now cost £10 for a gun smith to check it over and if no one want it , then you have got to go and pick it up and you are then back to where you started from plus a few bob out of pocket :good:

You can ‘gift’ or ‘give’ it away. It is only an offence to SELL an out of proof gun.

That was really what I wanted to know Scully , so gift it is , anyone who is looking for one would be more than welcome to have it , as long as they have got a up to date s g c and can pick it up from my house in Norfolk .:good:

Took 2 into the police, nice and easy to deal with, stamped my sgc and that's it.

Yea I have done the same , took one in a few months ago , marked it on my s g c and they said there was no need to notify the firearm department as it will be altered on my next renewal , as you say , dead easy :good:

Any competent gunsmith can tell you if a gun is in proof or not in 5 minutes or less .Thats a visual inspection , measure bores and wall thickness [not necessary for proof but nice to know] and plug the chambers . No need to leave it anywhere . He can do in front of you explaining what he is doing why and what it all means .  I have done it hundred's of times and I never charged for doing so .

Just curious , why not the police ?

Anti gun propaganda. Photos of dangerous weapons handed in / confiscated. I'm firmly not against police any way at all but when our wonderfull government who pulls the strings of the police wants something done against gun ownership any innocently handed in items are no longer your property so the police (government) can do with them as they please & if that happens to be anti gun I want no part of it so any unwanted unsaleable or non gift able guns go to an rfd. Most of mine have ended up with gunsmiths for spares. Plus when handguns were banned it was said they were being scrapped & melted down. I saw home office approved rfd buyers at auction buying handguns to be exported.
