Case tractor starting issue

My case tractor has an annoying problem that I can’t work out , so maybe someone may be able to help me out. The battery is new and I also put a new earth lead on, the old one looked a bit passed it, when I get in it I turn the key on and all the right lights come on, you turn it a bit more and hold to engage the hot start for about 20 seconds if it’s cold and then turn all the way to start, all I get is a click and all the panel lights go dead, if I take the earth lead off the battery and put it back on , go through the start procedure again and it starts, it was doing this before I put a new battery on as well.

sounds like you might need a new Bendix.........also clean and tighten all the wires to the starter field wire HT  earth etc...

I'd try running a secondary earth direct from battery to starter, then short the starter to eliminate wiring if successful could be a contact on key or wire if not starter lazy 👌

You can see if it's a earth problem by putting a jump lead on the N side of the battery and put other end on the engine block , ie , a clean big bolt around bell housing.

I’ll try the jump lead on the Earth to the tractor, it’s a case 895xl

There's a problem with electrical resistance on one of the battery connectors. This causes the voltage to drop when current is drawn. Starting is a really heavy current drain and the more the current drain the more the voltage drop and that's why the panel lights go dead. Clean the contact area of the battery terminals and the cable clamps with light sandpaper and refit.
