I have no idea what I should be looking for. I have been told I need something at least 40" and with 1080p (whatever the hell that is). I don't want to spend a bundle and know that whatever I buy it will be out of date in 4 years and then worth tuppence (probably cheaper to throw than fix, such is the way with technology). There is a Richer Sounds walking distance from my offices and so I will be buying from them. My thanks to the tech heads. I am now beginning to feel old. There would have been a time I would have known this stuff and been inclined to research it all, buy some sound and vision mags, browse the internet, join a telly forum, but now, I just can't be ***** - I know my kids will have written on it in marker pen by next weekend. myuserid Posted October 18, 2007 Report Share Posted October 18, 2007 LCD's are probably better than Plasmas as they dont suffer from screen burns as said above. Get one which is HD ready, with at least 2 HDMI ports. If you dont have sky then get a freeview ready TV. Also make sure you have at least 2 years warranty with the option to extend, if its only got 1 year, upgrading to two is well worth it. Went for LCD because I think it's a better picture (compared to plasma) and the running consumption is about 115 watts. Same size in plasma would be approx 450 watts. Its got all the bells and whistles, HD 1080, built in digital receiver, smart scarts, and smart standby (1 watt). However, the Sony can't be faulted, I just happened to go Panasonic. However, the Sony can't be faulted, I just happened to go Panasonic. 1080i i expect, as im only aware of 1 panasonic lcd that does 1080p and its not been out long. Panasonic unfortunatly wont do an LCD in the size Mung is looking for as they are a company based mainly around Plasma so the biggest lcd they do is 37", they also do a plasma equivillent size, so would be going for that. Plasma is in my opinion a much more true to life picture than LCD. LCD is too bright and the blacks on every LCD ive seen apart from the sony 40w3000 and 32d3000 have been rubbish in low light. If you want LCD Sony or Panasonic are the way forwards. If you want plasma (and you do) you want a pioneer or panasonic. Screen burn is nearly non existant on modern plasma's and screen retention equally the same. However mid tones and blacks on plasma make LCD's look stupid. Also 1080P is not worth the money at the moment, mainly as im nto aware of a plama with it and secondly because 100mhz will make for a more plesant viewing experiance however you should see hte advantages of this even on standard deffintition (sp), however you will only see the advantages of 1080P on a 1080P HD or blue ray player (another £300+) whilst playing HD or blue ray disks (not cheap) BTW the sony you are talkign about 40w2000 is an old model now, and has been replaced by the 40w3000 which is far better back lighting wise, the closest you get to plasma in an LCD. In the 1 year or so ive had an intrest in tv's ive come full circle, used to be compltetly anti plasma, however the most recent plasma's and long enough looking at TV's not just following the crowd has persuaded me to the above. Ignore the screen burn stuff, the lcd guys just use it as they have nothing else to bash plasmas with :blink: the EARLY plasmas used to suffer from screen burn, but new ones simply don't. Google and you'll find out why. Everyone is talking sense in going for a 1080p (assuming you have some HD content - HD-DVD, BluRay, Xbox 360 or SkyHD), otherwise as long as its HD ready, you'll be fine if you're watching freeview (HD freeview won't be around for a while yet). My personal preference on Plasmas is Pioneer, they simply ooze quality and the picture was second to none when we bought out PDP-436 XDE in December 06. If you have a cinema setup, think about amps and remotes as well. I bought a pioneer a/v amp at the same time and the single remote controls the screen and the amp, so when you change input on the tv, it gets the right sound input on the amp etc, a little thing, but means the missus can use the TV without asking where the sound has gone Si Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
