Looking around for a disco at the mo. Diesel, manual, five door,7 seat. Not looking at spending a fortune as it will be used a lot for shooting, fishing and lugging kayaks about as well as shifting the family around.

Anything i should be wary of? is it feasable to stand up in the sun roof to shoot from while lamping?

Cheers Andy. :good:

I paid £650 for mine, and another ton to get it through a test,2 years ago now.

its on a limited miles policy for £200 a year, and it gets used far more than the Range Rover ever did, from taking stuff to the tip, feeding the pond and the shoot to taking the dogs out.

when it dies I will buy another.

Hi Chunk,

Most of the main problems have already been said, unfortunately the main pain in the neck is that the sunroof's only wind back a little way so you can't shoot out of them.

I'm on my 3rd one now, had a N'reg 300Tdi a Series II '99 4.0 V8 and now a 53 plate TD5, had to have the gearbox rebuilt on the N' reg but knew that when I bought it (cheap) the other's have been Auto's, not had any problems at all really, just watch for sunroof's or windscreen leaks, check all carpets in all footwells are dry, chances are on an old one they won't be.

Good thing about Landy's are there are a lot of specialist part dealers and service agents around so they can be run fairly cheaply.

If possible it may be worth looking for one without sunroofs although these are rare.!! and getting an aftermarket removable one put in. that way you wouldn't have had any leak problems and you will be able to shoot out of it.

One other thing depending on how tall you are, if you need to fold the rear seats down then because of the way the fold up you can't have the drivers seat that far back, at least you can't in my Series II not sure if this is the same on the older ones.

Thanks for all your replys guys. Taken it all on board to make a decision over an L reg model ive just been to collect today. Everything looks good, service history, recent cam belt, recent service, 80 odd k with history to back up. 900 quid.

Seen what you mean about the sunroofs hewey. Its a non starter.

The cars in really nice condition, and runs a treat. Got home in the dark but i`ll go right over it tomorrow, it looks like a result at the mo :good:

I have a 52 plate discovery, excellent apart from a fuel leak which is apparently common with the diesel models. Also if/when this happens the new units are often faulty for some reason, I've had 2 fitted so far, all two leaking. Its going in tomorrow for another unit.

Units cost £110 plus fitting, so you will be looking at £200+.

Not too bad compared to other cars I've had.

Is that the fuel pump? have to keep an eye on that. I normally do all my own work on cars but havent owned anything with these proportions before. I normally get a haynes manual as a matter of course with a new car and then sit an read it like a sad anorak.

Its not the fuel pump, its towards the front near the front diff. Its a unit which has seals which perish over time, dont have a clue what it is or does, will let you know tomorrow when I get the invoice.

When the unit packs up you will know about it, diesel pours out, bet I was getting 10 miles to the gallon with that leak. There is no way of fixing it yourself unless you happen to have a lift in your garden shed.

A right royal pain in the a*se!

Good luck with your new purchase Chunk.

If you need any questions answering at all the Disco then goto:

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/

Very helpful chaps on there all your questions will be answered. (hopefully).

If you work round a way of changing the sunroof's to shoot out of then let me know.

Baldrick, have you got a Auto or Manual, Auto's are thirsty, especially round town, you will be lucky to get any more than 25MPG anywhere. and down to 20 or even less round town. Manuals usually give about 5 MPG extra.

I had a TD5Alive remap on my 53 plate Auto which made an astonishing difference to the way it drives and give 1-2 more MPG as well, well worth it. :good:

Hi Baldrick,

Yep sorry mate, brain not in gear this morning.

One thing you could try is the old EGR replacement if you haven't got one already, some reckon that increases the MPG by 2-3, although even if it only makes it run better then at the price it's a very cheap Mod, although make sure you get a half decent kit, some of the one's on Fleabay aren't up to much.!! as mines still under Land Rover warranty I'll be waiting until that runs out in March before doing it.

Mine's in Lookers for a Service and MOT today, so will see if they notice it's been remapped and wether it passes the MOT emission test OK, Gary at TD5Alive ensure's me it won't be a problem but I'm still a bit unsure till I get the results.!!

I did remove the ITG air Filter element and replace it with the original, probably just me been a little apprehensive about then knowing I've played with it but better safe than sorry.

Guess I'm just lazy and can't be bothered to keep going to the Garage.!! :good:

Sorry chunk, looks like me and Baldrick highjacked your Thread for Personal banter, will take it offline for future comments.!!

No worries mate, threads have a habbit of doing that and i`m not one to get upset anyway. Cheers for the landy link, that was to be my next question.

Whats an EGR replacement? is it some kind of bolt on item to improve performance.

Cheers

Myuserid, I'd be interested to hear what the fault is. I've got an '02 Td5 Disco that seems to drink diesel like it's going out of fashion. I haven't noticed any fuel leaks though.

3rd time lucky, got it repaired today and passed the MOT.

Fuel connector assembly is what it says on the bill, so I'm guessing thats where the fuel line meats the engine.

Now £300 lighter than this morning!

Hi Chunk,

It's the Exhaust Gas Recirculation system on the Disco's, I'm not a mechanic but the benefits of blanking the EGR system are to prevent dirty exhaust gasses entering the inlet manifold, and to reduce air inlet temperatures.

If you go onto Landyzone there are a million threads about it including this one, think this is mainly for the TD5 but as far as I know the same applies to the 300.
