Laminate Shepherds Crook

After making 2 Oak Crooks a few weeks ago, I thought I’d have a go at a laminated crook and matching spacers, with the Boo (scarf) joint.

I had a nice piece of Ash, which was big enough for a crook and a market stick handle .

After cutting the handles out I looked around for a contrasting wood for the middle and decided on Purple Heart.

I cut the handles down the middle and sanded and glued the Purple Heart and clamped the handles together.

I made matching spacers and drilled the handles for the stainless stud bar and decided on the scarf joint before using epoxy for gluing the stud bar in place.

I had a hazel shaft and drilled the top and cut the joint to suit the handle, and to be honest it wasn’t to difficult to do, and matched really well after a little bit of sanding to adjust the joint.

I haven’t quite finished it yet as I have a bit more sanding to do, but when sanded, I will Danish oil the stick and the handle will look very nice, once oiled.

I also have a matching market crook, which I have yet to sand and shape, but not sure about the shank as it has a few marks on it, which will bug me if I don’t change it, and do it properly.

I’ve been busy the last few days, so haven’t had chance to complete the crook until today.

It had a few coatings of Danish Oil and I’m pleased with my 1st laminate stick and how the oil just makes the grain pop out, and the Purple Heart wood is impressive and will use this again on future projects.

The market stick, I wasn’t happy with the shank as it had a few marks on it, so I replaced it with a better shank and glued it on this morning, so will complete it tomorrow once the resin is fully cured.

Had a sort out in my shed with the sticks I cut back in December and bundled them up, and have them laying flat from straps in the rafters for 12 months.

I have plenty of sticks now for the coming projects.

Will post an update of the market stick in a day or two.

That is an impressive number of cut sticks which will keep you busy in the future.

Love the laminated crooks, they are excellent, well done.

Please keep us posted with any further sticks that you make. Always great to look at.

Thanks Old Boggy for your comments, and I have completed the market stick today.

I decided to add a coloured Danish Oil on the initial coat and wiped the excess off, to highlight the grain of the Ash.

Once the oil was dry I sanded the handle exposing the grain and gave it a few coats of clear Danish Oil to seal.

Im pleased with the result and the Purple Heart really pops out once oiled.

I have a nice piece of Walnut, which I’m looking at using for the next project.
