Lord Geordie
Your can still use it without a clutch cable to get home. The worst gear is 1st and if you come to a stop on an incline forget it I had to drive a Van home from Scotland with a broken cable. From a flat start just throttle up a little and push the stick towards the 1st position (it won't go in straight away but gives the car momentum) when at about 3mph let go of the throttle and the stick will drop into first. Throttle to about 10mph let go of the throttle again and pull back into second and the same through the rest of the gears. Aproach lights and roundabouts with your witts about you and most times you never need to stop. As a get you home measure it's fine but not reccomended as a everyday solution LG
Pushkin
Ahhh ha The old double de-clutching comes to mind for this one Anyone who has done the Police driving course (as a member of the public!) in this area is shown how to master this devious old trick - use your wifes car to pratice on Pushkin B)
Wookie
I'm agreeing with Dazzyboi on cars... Fiancee and I are moving house pretty soon (about a week and we have a weekend away planned for this weekend (non-refundable, then shafted when our completion date got moved forward by two weeks)) and my car has just decided it wants to complain about wheel bearings. So, just to add spice to an expensive time, I have to for out 200 notes for new front discs, pads and wheel bearings, but I also have to fork out 200 notes on getting the lot fitted. Deep joy of joys. Luckily my local place can get them fitted on friday when we're travelling and I can pick it up when we get back. Still not happy about it though. Dip the clutch and at the same time drop into neutral, release the clutch and then depress and select the next gear. Practice makes perfect. Pushkin
LG - thats a blooming good point mate Don't know how it works but it does Perhaps that action gives the engine the time required to slow the revs enough to do the change?B)? But you are right it won't actually do anything itself Anyone more knowledgable have the answer as to why it does? Pushkin
al4x
its not quite the same but more based on reving then backing off lets you slide it out of gear then you rev it slightly as you select the next. Its a trial and error job and have to say probably not good for the gearbox so best off just getting recovered and bunging a new cable on
sidibear
They syncromesh works by matching gearbox rotation speed from the engine to the final drive. If you don't use the clutch you blip the throttle to speed up the syncro to match the gearbox rotational speed coming from the wheels. Bearing in mind that the weels will be rotating the gearbox, it kinda meets in the midle somewhere Still can't beat an auto

Gordon R
Engine off - select first gear. Turn the starter, the car lurches forward, fires up and you are away. Give it some throttle and ease off - then select third etc. Driving without a clutch is a doddle, but don't get stuck on hill. You have to give yourself more room behind cars. When slowing down, knock into neutral. If you have to halt - switch the engine off. If you can keep going - fish around for a lower gear - you will find one which selects more easily. Done this in Rovers, Discos etc. Twice out of necessity - a couple of times for a bet.
