Hewey
Hi All, Just wondered if any of you had seen this: http://www.ultimasports.co.uk/topgearlaprecord.html My mate finished building a bright yellow one of these about 4 months back although his "only" has 528bhp it's still incredibly quick. Dunkield
Someone owns one of these near me, I didn't realise they were that quick. Incredible achievment, well done to them. I have to say the way Ted Marlow bangs on (like soooo many people where I work ) I have absolutely no desire to ever meet him.

pin
The Veyron wouldn't stand a chance, and unless an owner lends them one it won't ever go on there.
Dunkield
I just watched the in car video, you can it is good lap by a very experienced driver - it looks almost effortless, a very smooth and controlled piece of driving
pin
Goes to show just how much faster a formula 1 car is then. The sub 1 minute lap from the Renault F1 car on a wet track was some achievement - I hear they want to come back and do it in the dry
NorfolkBoy
The Veyron wouldn't stand a chance, and unless an owner lends them one it won't ever go on there. I watched James May's high speed run in the Veyron on TG ealier this week, c/o BBC America. What a beautifully engineered piece of kit
Dunkield
How much power does a current F1 car produce, and what engine capacity are they these days, anyone?
NorfolkBoy
How much power does a current F1 car produce, and what engine capacity are they these days, anyone? c/o wikipedia For a decade F1 cars had run with 3.0 litre naturally-aspirated V10 engines, but in an attempt to slow the cars down, the FIA mandated that as of the 2006 season the cars must be powered by 2.4 litre naturally-aspirated engines in the V8 configuration that have no more than four valves per cylinder. Further technical restrictions such as a ban on variable intake trumpets have also been introduced with the new 2.4 L V8 formula to prevent the teams from achieving higher rpm and horsepower too quickly. As of the start of the 2007 season all engines are now limited to 19,000 rpm in an effort to improve engine reliability and to cut costs down in general. Once the teams started using exotic alloys in the late 1990s, the FIA banned the use of exotic materials in engine construction, and only aluminum and iron alloys were allowed for the pistons, cylinders, connecting rods, and crankshafts. Nevertheless through engineering on the limit and the use of such devices as pneumatic valves, modern F1 engines have revved up to over 18,000 rpm since approximately the 2000 season. Almost each year the FIA has enforced material and design restrictions to limit power, otherwise the 3.0L V10 engines would easily have exceeded 22,000 rpm and well over 1,000 hp (735 kW). Even with the restrictions the V10s in the 2005 season were reputed to develop 960 hp (715 kW). The new 2.4L V8 engines are reported to develop between 700 hp (520 kW) and 780 hp (582 kW). pin
2.4l V8 normally aspirated, no variable intake with 19k rev limit. Depends on the team but anything from 700bhp upwards. I think the McLaren does about 780bhp
Dunkield
Thanks. For my sins I watch the Drag Racing on 5 US and they were comparing the power of the current Funny Car/Top Fuel engines to Indycars and the like. The comment was that at 8,000 horsepower a current FC/TF engine is producing more power per cynlinder than an Indycar - so it would seem the same apllies to an F1 car as well. Mungler
Just watched the lap and it put the hairs up on the back of my neck. Way cool. So what's the damage on one of those in kit and as built form?
Hewey
Hi Mungler, I'm guessing my mate paid in the region of 45-50K but like I said that's a guess. There again he has done a good job on his, got a decent guy in to do all the carpets etc, got most of the options like Air-con. He's even got a MP3 player in it though why you would want one of those with a V8 American Speed engine rumbling behind you I would never know. That sounds better than any music I know. They go for a lot less on Autotrader 2nd hand but you don't know how well they've been put together.
