It is illegal to release Grey squirrels. There are one or two exeptions where a licence is granted.
JKD
Can't you offer to release them for him ? And 'release' them in a proper manner, using a small round piece of lead through the cranium 🙂
Mice!
1 hour ago, samboy said: Any thoughts on this. Is it legal ?. No it's not legal, you can't deliberately trap a grey then release them as there an invasive species. The fella won't think he's doing any harm, he obviously doesn't want to kill them, but they'll most probably just return, or others will. Stan79
Definitely illegal.
scolopax
Does it really matter? Yes it’s illegal but catching then releasing again in the same locality makes not one iota of difference to the UK grey situation as a whole. I would not get my knickers in a twist over it.
