It's basically a secure link to remote servers that hide your identity, normally you have an id on line an ip address this lets people know where you are, with a vpn it gives out a randon IP address so you can't (easily) be traced, you can make it very complicated by linking through various servers in different parts of the world.

If for example you want to watch a video on youtube but it blocks you as not available in your country, you can connect to a server in say bolivia that would allow access.

Watching this thread with interest as I might be in the market soon.

Not wishing to drag this thread too much off topic, but I predict there may be a glut of threads like this, if the "Online Safety Bill" is enacted as its currently written, it's going to be like the GDPR fallout, only worse. A lot of foreign sites will simply choose to block UK IP addresses, rather than doing the work of complying.

Nord has been very good in my experience. I have used a few over the years, including when working in China where a VPN is vital. I buy it with three-yearly deals.

ExpressVPN is pretty good too. 

There are plenty of cheaper or free ones if outright speed or amount of data is less important.
