pavman
Had a great day with Alex on his shoot picking up with Astra, a nice bag 70 head to include a Charlie a nice bonus, a little concern all round when Big Martin turned up sporting a pink whistle for Merlin! and dispite the gay jibes the little Springer worked like a demon all day. As normal a bit hectic to get any decent pics but with luck it conveys we had a good day

He wasn't looking quite like that at the end, after having to walk all the way back to the yard even after the last drive had finished as nobody picked him up. Must be over a mile across sticky wet boot clinging fields. Poor chap. I blame it on the keeper not looking after his beaters enough!!! Was a great day, looking forward to the next. Ferretboy111
Total bag was. 58 pheasants 5 duck 2 pigeons 3 hares 1 rabbit 1 fox For 252 shots. A huge difference with the different strains of pheasants, on flying ability and take off climb, the 1st cross americans and manchurians flew the best, with an almost immediate climb, the other birds took their time to get up but most got up there in the end. Many thanks to everyone who helps me out, there was an amazing show of birds on most drives certainly are going to be plenty around for beaters day if the guns shoot as bad as they did last saturday. I believe we managed to fit in around 6 drives, with a few little drives into drives, ie: woods into cover. Saw a few partridges, snipe and woodcock, aswell as 3 foxes. All birds were well formed, and all had very nice tails on them. Was all in all very good, shame the guns didnt shoot alittle better. Suffolk shooter
Pavman, I asked you not to show the pre-shoot drinking ritual. Mind you it was a late one 9.10am by the time the last gun got there And how come it was hectic for you, you just stood and picked up Nice couple of retrieves for Astra though buddy FB111, how the hell did you only count 6 drives B) Here's the list of drives I believe we did: - 1) Manor Duck pond 2) Manor plantation 3) Manor Cover strip 4) Far side of the Carrs 5) The Carrs 6) The Carrs Cover Strip 7) Don't know the name, but we'll call it the Scrapyard challange drive after the amount of old cars there 8) Pulhams Then Lunch 9) Farmyard Duck Pond 10) Farmyard rough area 11) Maize cover strip 12) Russells Wood 13) W***** Spinney I thought we were on a major Partridge Drive Must get out and get those other Charlies, almost as many as on my shoot Damn good day though none the less, and certainly a good bag. Paul was a good shot last year, but this year he just couldn't miss, it was good just to watch him bring down those high birds from the Manor Cover strip. Look forward to the next shoot in a couple of weeks, only somebody else can bring in the Lane this time SS
MC
I thoroughly enjoyed it and so did Tracey, Merlin however is still flat on his back recovering. A mile back to the farm Hey FG22? Is was a damn sight further than that. To say I was savage when I got back to the farm was an understatement. It was easily 2 miles and that was when I got to the road. Nothing to do with the keeper, I heard he did ask someone to go and pick me up. Must have been too much like hard work
Suffolk shooter
Lets get the record straight, I was the one who said we'll drive round the back of the spinney and did, and I was the one who tried phoning you twice whilst there and once when we got back to the yard. It was FB111 who said "let's get back to the yard, those in the landies will pick him up". Not my bloody responsibility to organise the beaters transport now is it. Cranfield
Ferretboy111, if you get a chance sometime this season, it would be very interesting if you could post a picture of a cock bird of each of the pheasant strains you bought in. I am sure I am not the only one here that would like to see the comparisons.
Ferretboy111
Many of the little drives arent as i call "Drives", as they were just pushing in areas to the drives. Cant really call flushing 10 ducks off a pond (or puddle) a drive. Or pushing a 100m/100m woodland into a piece of cover a meter away another drive. Masses of birds about throughout, and from only 160 released- cant imagine how many we would see if i released anymore, say 1000? Drives i call are. 1) The manor 2) The carrs 3) Bakers 4) Pulhams 5) Johns 6) Russels 7) The spinney Cranfield, will try my hardest, hopefully they will shoot another mixture next day as the birds are all plucked and dressed now. I must admit i would have loved to have known the look of the birds when i was researching before hand about them so i will sort something out. Also a special little thank you to SS daughter- Jessica, she is only 8 i think and coped extremely well beating, even through the thickest drives. And she got to see her deer atlast. Alex funnily enough you probably actually wouldn't see that many more proportionally if you put a lot more down. To me sounds like you're either gaining plenty from a neighbour or have a very healthy wild bird population. I beat on a shoot where the keeper believes put more down and you get more back and he releases 1200 onto 500 acres and the return on a day isn't much better than yours! All the neighbours get good shooting though! Sounds like you had a cracking day though.
Suffolk shooter
Jess said she really enjoyed it, even though I frog marched her down the lane. Poor girl was knackered by the end of the day, but enjoyed hitting bushes with sticks and shouting hey - hey all day. Stuartp, I was trying to bring an Essex flavour to the shoot but couldn't quite force myself to wear white Kappa and bling. In all seriousness, it was extremely warm, and should have been windy and cloudy in which case I would have had my Tweed coat on and not the hoodie. Cheers to MC for picking up the Gaiter/chaps, they certainly did the trick going through the brambles and nettles. Pin get yourself some of these mate, it will save on the Fizzy knees SS
