What is this?

Whilst walking the dogs today, I decided to walk up to the lake nestled at the bottom of the  mountain above our village.

It’s a decent walk and I was out a few hours in the beautiful sunshine.

I walked along the edge of the lake , whilst the spaniels were swimming around, and found this in the shallows near the reeds.

I had to open it up, and it hinged from the left side to expose soft putty like product inside.

I thought it may be used to identify animal prints , like mink or otter.

Can anyone confirm it’s use ?

Its a mink raft . you use this to see if there's mink in the area by checking the tin inside it for tracks that the animal leaves as it passes threw , Find them and you know there's mink and you can set a trap

Thanks Bigbob, I thought it was along those lines.

I haven’t walked up to the lake since last year and it has all new fences and galvanised gates around it.

The council have spent a few bob with all the fancy signs.

Use similar here to monitor water voles and check for any signs of mink

on a floating raft

That makes sense as it shows water voles on the notice board.

I have never seen a water vole there in the 45 years I’ve been there !

Unless they are thinking of releasing them there, and that is why the mink raft is there 👍

It’s easier to spot the grass they chew off than them next time I’m down the river I’ll try and get a picture for you
