BobbyH
Earlier today, I went and started shooting Skeet through ‘The steel shotgun’ as per the other thread, so I thought I would give DTL a go with my proper gun (Steel proofed) just to see how steel holds up. Using gamebores white gold pro steel and Super steel, both in 24g 7.5 through a 1/2 choke, I saw pretty much the same breaks as I would normally using 28g 7.5’s through a full choke! I would shoot steel in a DTL comp no problem! This intrigued me, so off topic…. I kept with the 1/2 choke and used my Eley Superb 28g 7.5’s….still great breaks then moved to Eley Olympic blues 28g 9’s…..and they still broke very nicely! TIGHTCHOKE
I would suggest that the gun fits you quite well then.

Cawdor118
I shoot at a steel only club where ABT, DTL and NSK are options. I go through about 1k steel every 6 weeks and im entirely confident in its abilities. Generally speaking, I find Gamebore to be absolutely junk. But, that is purely my opinion which I recognise is as worthless as the next. I tend to stick to Hull Pro Steel 7s or Cheddite Universal steel 7s for everything. There are plenty of 100/300's, 50/150s shot in DTL with steel 👍. The only thing I would suggest, is to slacken the chokes up a little. Steel shoots tighter, so a 1/4 + 3/8th would be more than sufficient for both Skeet and DTL. Hope this helps 👌

murray smith
I often use express 16 gram steel 71/2 shot, if I and my ol hammer gun or ancient Miruke do our bit we break edge on clays at 40 yards n a bit no problem or appreciable recoil, not so good in my semi auto Beretta tho, so Express 24 grm fibre Superlights 8 shot do exactly the same job with a similar lack of recoil. It wasn't on purpose as I had forgotten to change my chokes, but it had no ill effects. 👍 Steel is like everything else in shooting, over complicated and over thought. Just shoot it. It works. Robden
Nothing new. My friend has been shooting steel for the last couple of years, through his 3/4 and full Miroku with no ill effects. And that is at least 2 comps a month, plus practice.

Yes 100 percent was shooting steel thru tight chokes at the Wildfowling for years 👍

So where did the whole no tighter than 1/2 come in?? Is that just for HP/HV steel?

BobbyH Posted Thursday at 13:29 Author Report Share Posted Thursday at 13:29 So, I know everyone has different opinions, but is it safe to shoot standard steel through tighter than 1/2 choke?

Yes, STANDARD Steel (soft iron) (small pellets) will be fine, there's a lot of us who have done it.
