Mrs Sweepy
hi was just wondering what your views are on someone else working your dog. as most of you know i have a 17month old clumber. so this has been hes first season beating with me.now unfortunatly do to work i can only beat with him on a saturday . but sammy (the dog) has been invited to other shoots during the weeks (lucky little ***) now sweepy is busy with he own dog .so a very dear friend ,who lost their gundog last year has been taking him for me . now i did have my doubts at first .one being that it might confuse the dog . but after much thinking i decided to let the friend take sammy .as i had got sammy in the first place to be a working dog .and not have him shut in a kennel when he could be out their working . now this friend has taking sammy on four different shoots .and when he brings sammy back he full of praise and how well the little fella has work .and sammy has even had praise off some of the guns on these shoots and so far i have notice a differance in sammy . he seems more alert to my commands .and more willingto please me .and when we hunt its like he already knows what my next move is . so their seems to be no harm done to someone else working him. so what are your views on it . am intested to know .would you let someone else work you dog or not . i know for a fact that are springer would only work for one person .and that is sweepy .but i believe springers are a one persons dog anyway . were it appears that a clumber will go with any tom, ****, or harry xxxxsuzy
wy111
Funny that you mention spaniels are a 1 persons dog. Mine, a b/w ess bitch wont go with anyone else but me but her sire will go with anyone who only reasonably knows commands. My next door but one, who goes shooting with me, looked after my dogs while on holiday last year, walks and all that, but still wont go with him when we are on different teams(Walk and stand). If they do work properly with some other person AND to have beneficial efects when back home, why not? My young lab bitch would sit at the side of a scarcrow all day if told to, but thats a different story! Probably get some comeback on the scarcrow bit tho. al4x
my only issue with it is I'd have to be 100% about the person and dog. Shoot days can be dangerous for dogs, with vehicles fences livestock etc etc about. I know if something happens while I'm in control thats one thing but if something happened and someone else was in control I'd always be thinking would I have stopped it
FBF
if the handler had the knowledge and the skill to work a gundog id have no hesitation, i wouldnt let my dog out with a begginer
charlie 1
There is only one person that i would let work my dog other than me and that is my dad. When my bitch comes into season i am allowed to take his dog picking up, and on days like this staurday which i won't be able to go picking up . then i let me dad use my two dogs. And i only let him use them as we spend the summer training together so he knows my dogs and i know his. there is no way that i would let anyone else near my dogs no matter how well i know them or not. just because i know that wotever happens they will do things differently and if something where to happen to the dog because the other person let him get away with things or if the dog didn't listen to him i would be devistated. just my opinion but i like my dogs to work with me or they stay at home. Mrs Sweepy
yes i would not have given sammy to anyone who was not experience in gundog training . to have given him to someone who did not know what they were doing would have ruined all the hard work that the both of us had done. so do you think that most gundogs are a one persons dog. like my springer. or are their certain breeds of gundogs that will work with more then one person. i should think that the lab is a one person dog . but what about pointers and cockers. xxxsuzy
EastSussexLad
When my dad had his springer he would not leave his side and wouldnt work with anyone else accept my dad. But when i got my cocker He will work with anyone even my dads mate who comes shooting with us
lurcherboy
Suzy, I let Ben my lab out to people that are dog wise and know the correct commands and so far everyone that has used him have brought him home and praised him. He does like to hold onto the birds though and wander around looking for his master A quick thumb to the gum secures a release though. I must try and remember to tell them that LB
Cranfield
I think all breeds will work for other capable people, this is proven by the amount of full trained and part trained dogs sold by gundog trainers. I know of at least 10 people that have bought fully trained Springers, that ended up working for a couple of different (but capable) people. Individual dogs may have their own personal nature, but that is slightly different. I would lend a dog to someone on the same criteria that I would lend a gun. They have to be totally trustworthy, capable and at least as good as me.
