mr lee
'Jake' my border collie of 12 years and best mate is in a bit of a state tonight. All evening he has been limping round the house and had no interest in going up the woods for a walk. He normally sleeps on the landing in our house and if the kids wake up at all he comes into our room and whimpers whilst pressing a cold nose against your leg or arm to let us know one of the kids wants us. Tonight though he sort of collapsed with a whimper at the bottom of the stairs and couldn't manage 2 stairs let alone all of them. In all his years he has never not slept on the landing. I nipped back down earlier to give him his blanket to sleep on so it was comfier for him. I've been awake since 1am listening out for him. At 3pm he started to whimper a lot so I went back down to him to see how he was doing. Poor ****** has pee'd where he is laid and looked really sorry for himself. I lifted him out onto the garden incase he needed to finish but when I tried to stand him up he just laid down. I phoned the vet at 4am asking for his advice and was asked to check a few things and then ring him back if he get's worse. I have brought him upstairs with a fresh blanket and he is currently laid down at the side of me awake but looking very sorry for himself. Doubt I will sleep tonight though. Ever since we brought him home as a puppy he has done everything with me, been everywhere with me and cry's like mad if I go off without him. In all my adult years I can only recall ever shedding tears at the birth of my two kids and the death of my grandfather, yet tonight I have to admit I have one or two at the moment worried for my mate. Got my fingers and everything else crossed he is going to be okay. Sorry for rambling but those of you with dogs will understand i'm sure. This happened to my dog a couple of months ago, she was 14 yrs old. Everytime she tried to stand up she collapsed she couldnt even get out of her bed. My mum phoned up the vets and we took her there when they opened. The vet said it was probably best if we put her to sleep, my mum agreed and so the vet gave her a dose but she didnt want to go so the vet had to give her a 2nd dose this time she went. She was a cross breed between a retreiver and a collie and the best natured dog she was so playful and friendly. Mate if your dog is in pain or suffering like not eating or drinking dont let him suffer, do what you think is best for him. He is a good age and has done well. Evil Elvis
Not a good start to the year for us is it dude? If theres any consolation, hes young for a collie, mine lived until 17, It could be a stroke, my dog polly had one about the same age, and a dogs brain is a lot different than ours and it healed and she lived another 5 years. They are amazing creatuires.....Good luck and I hope the news is good!
Cranfield
It could be many things, some of them very curable, I hope its one of the latter. A trip to the Vet this morning will hopefully get you some good news.
AdamC
Sorry to hear this. Try not to worry too much until you have got him to the vets to see what they say. Just keep him warm and comfortable until you can get him to the vets.
Sundowner
Real sorry to hear about your dog. Hope it turns out to be something they can fix !!!!!
mr lee
Thanks guys. Been to the vets this morning with him after been awake all night. They have given him a few jabs and done some tests on him so now we are waiting for the results to come through. He does seem a bit perkier this morning but still not his usual happy self. He is taking water okay at the minute too so that's a positive. Thanks again for your replies.
TPR1966
Hello there mr lee Sorry to hear about you're mate, I to have the same kind of dog here and if anything happens to her I'll be gutted as she has never left my side for 10 years now. One thing I have picked up on though mate and I was told this along time ago. Never let the dog upstairs because when then they come down the stairs they more often then not miss the last 2 treads and can damage their front legs. A lot of vets rekon that's how dogs get arthritis in their legs because owners let them go up and down the stairs. I hope you give us all some good news soon mate on the results, take care. Crackerz. mr lee
Cheers Crackerz. Both our dogs are pretty good on the stairs. We live right next to a wood too which is quite steep and they are forever running all over there so the stairs don't seem too much of an issue to them. Through the day they like to sit on them and look out of the front window by the door and let anybody passing know they are there if they step onto my driveway. At the minute he actually looks pretty unimpressed with me for taking him to the vets and having needles stuck into him. Neither of them like going there and normally put up a bit of a struggle when we pull into the car park.
TPR1966
That's fine then mate, they are a hard dog, nothing seems to stop them do's it I guess I'm lucky with mine she don't mind the vets at all Anyway I do hope it all gets sorted m8 and you're best mate is soon back to his normal self
mr lee
Just a quick update. I had to nip out this afternoon but on arrival back he was so pleased to see me. Got up a lot better than he was and tail was going likemad. He is walking round the house now too. Still not 100% but a massive improvement on last night and this morning. He is still limping a bit but can sit down and get back up much better.

mr lee
How is he today? P. He is a marked improvement on yesterday and trying to do more. I haven't taken him for a walk as yet but more a gentle wandering round the garden. His appetite is improving slowly too but we are having to seperate both dogs at meal time because if the other one see's food lying around it will be gone. Spoke to vet today and as yet he hasn't had the results back. He wondered if he had taken a bad fall at some point whilst out walking and managed to either pull something or just badly bruise his hip. I know he didn't take a tumble whilst out with me and the missus never noticed he fell. He hasn't left my side at all today though. Everywhere I go he has followed on. One thing I am not looking forward to is the vets bill.
TPR1966
Seems as though he's puckering up mate which is good news He's not leaving you're side because he knows you are looking after him, there not that daft are they

gsmith
Just a quick one, i dont know everything about dogs, but when i was much younger we had a lurcher and she was getting on a bit she had similar problems to you she lost the use of her rear legs, therefore not getting up to wake us to say she needed to go out for a pee in the night. Anyhow we were determined not to let it beat her "im a stuborn *** and dont stop for anything" we started helping her stand and proping her up etc and manually walking her legs over a period of weeks, anyhow slowly things were getting better she started walking again very slow though but time went on and on and she got better and better, To cut the story short she was back running like mad with in a year and we had her a further 4-5 years. So i think dont give up because im dam sure that dog dont want to be without you just like you dont want to be without him.
