TV sizes

It even got a mention on the BBC News last night, we are really upping the size of our telly's these days.

I have resisted thus far, as we have a small lounge, but bit the bullet last week and have one on order.

Now I am getting static at home (not from the boy he can't, and he wanted a bigger one) for caving into trends and buying a 37" screen, to replace a 'perfectly adequate' 28" :o

My arguement is that being flat it won't protrude into the room so much, as the old one is 24" deep, but I thinking realisticly I should have got the 32" - oh well I will see what it looks like if it ever arrives . . . :good:

I was more than happy with my 28" CRT Panasonic up until the middle of this year. I bought a 42" Plasma and whenever I go to my parents and see their 32" (I think) I feel I need to break out the BI-NOC-ULARS to see the thing. Like you I had the same worries, is it "too big", but now I have it I would never go back.

Are you wall mounting it or putting in on a stand?

Funnily enough it is a Panasonic 28" that is going from our house too.

The new one, also a Panasonic, will sit (if my maths is right) on the old stand on its (£100!) swivel base, once I have modified the stand.

That way it can go back into the bay, out of the way a bit.

Funny actually because we almost bought a Panasonic 37" LCD the other day. But whilst at Curry's the girl explained to us that Brighton doesn't change to digital until 2010. In addition she had good information that TV's are about to undergo yet another format change. Well, we can't receive freeveiw yet and can't have sky. We aren't that bothered by the extra channels so have decided that our current tele plays DVD's just fine. So I have a spare grand to spend on a new bed, so the wife tells me!

the one you were looking at would have been a fine tv, although personally i would have been looking at the plamsa 37" they do (each to their own).the change is a load of coblers, theres nothing happening in the next few years, the only things that will be happening is digital, which wont be happening to all the country untill 2012, not to mention it makes little odds as the panasonics have analouge and digital tuners anyway, in march this year bbc and channel 4 will launch a digital free view HD channel, however unless you have an HD freeview reciever this will not really concern you.

The only other major change that will be happening is the next stage of HD and the first OLED Tv's, however with the price of this technology it will not be avalible much above 27" at a reasonable price for a gd few years. Not to mention toshiba have dropped the technology as over priced and not practical. Sony will have a 15" and 27" going on sale this year. But i doubt anyone will buy them.

dont trust what people say in currys, trust me i work there lol, there is not one person in my shop i consider knowledgeable about tv's, but we get next to no training and are paid sod all, so thats what you get unfortunatly.

We were in the same boat as you Axe we can't get Freeview or DAB here.

I had to get Freesat from Sky to get the extra channels, only to discover there are many filled with tat anyway

Are you eyes getting bad Stuart?

My sister in law has a 42" Sony something or other and it is too big for her living room, the picture is too big and to me looks pixellated.

I can't see anything wrong with my 26" Black and White Fergusson personally and don't know what all the fuss is about

Nick we got the 'award winning 5 star' 37" Panasonic plasma, for £599 from Laskys.

Most places that climed to have it in (at the right price I mean) didn't.

Aparently since it is well rated thay aren't that easy to get hold of, so I had to by a pedestal seperatly.

I will say I looked at some shocking TV's bigger/smaller/more money/less money during my research.

I can't understand why shops like John Lewis feed such terrible signals into their demo units, doesn't do them any favours at all.

I shied away from LCD, but only just, they have got better by a long way but for me this was the best I saw.

IF I had gone for the 32" it would have been an LCD.

The Pioneer 42" plasma was the best I saw in that size.

Nick, I have to be honest the very pleasant asistant was extremely helpful but did admit to her knowledge not having come from any training. She has a boy friend that works in the industry. However, she also said it may takle a few years yet, before such advent of this 'new format' she mentioned. If its any help, I got the impression it is to be a new ratio format perhaps more akin to cinema widscreen?

I figure the longer I wait the better my money will be spent, when we do get the switch over or move to somewhere we can have sky.

Stuart, we share the same conclusions on make and model.

Having just bought a 24" widescreen for my PC at home I now have a good idea of what size tele we actually need. I think the 37" would have been a tad on the large size at the moment. We would need to sit in the kitchen to view it at its best.

which model, the px70 or the pz?

you have gone for exactly the tv i was going to recomend at that size, the reason for the lack of stock is a failed uk delivery of panasonic, luckily for john lewis they got some, however currys got shafted, the reason for the poor signals i can relate to, our store has a terrible demo signal, all it is is the normal aerial split many times feeding off a dvd, which adds a channel 7. This added to the constant removal and replacement of the cables from tv's leads to the rapid deteriation of the signal. Ours is appauling.

things to bare in mind as to sky, a poor signal strength/quality will effect sky, im lucky to have an excellent signal at home, but at work, where we sell sky our signal is not good at all. This added to sky hd which is actually only SD upscalled makes for a very difficult product to sell.

The pioneers are lovely, if only they would get off their high horse about the prices, panasonic does 98% of the tv for 60% of the price. If its the pz you have got you will also have 1080p, although not the be all and end all of a good tv, it makes sense to have it. I would recomend you now buy a ps3 (80 when they come out) and use it as your blue ray player and enjoy some 1080p HD. It does make a massive difference over SD.

axe, there are a few good uns out there, i would recomend you go back to her in future, its one of the small nice things from the job when a customer returns to see you due to good service. I suspect it is OLED, as ive not heard of any new standards other than this. However i wait with bated breathe, as its an industry that can move over night.

i suspect you thinking of rear projection, they had a very limited viewing angles, where as plasma tends to have an excellent, personally i think the viewing angles is better than an LCd's however on paper i believe they are very similar.

Viewing angle on my Pioneer (507XDE) is amazing, you can stand just off to the side of it and still see a picture. Not that I do that a lot, that would be silly
