bgr
Hi, Although I own an O/U I have spent a lot of time in the US recently where I used a Semi Auto all the time, is there still a stigma around using them at a Clay Ground or Clay Shot? In the US I always used a Safe Flag or put the gun in a slip, force of habit, and one of the reason I want a black synthetic Extrema 2 is so that everyone can see it is a Semi Auto not an unbroken gun at a distance, thanks in advance for you help! BrowningBoy
Shouldn't be an issue as long as you sleve it and / or use a barrel flag. I shoot at Pirate's ground and there's plent of SA users there, my wife has one also and other grounds we got to don't have a problem with them. When I first shot (10 years ago) I had a SA and there was some tension then but these days I think that's passed by.

Markio
I haven't seen anyone with a stigma or issue with them but for clays they look like a right pain in the ****. My reasoning being i like to put my empties in the bin, i'll be ******** if i'm gonna crawl around picking them off the floor. O/U for me, i only need two shots at a time. chunk
No probs at my club. A few bods use them. Sleive it between stands. I dont use a flag and havent seen anyone else use one either. Bit gay.
Andy W
I have used my AL391 at local shoots and posh clubs full of snobs while shooting skeet, trap & sporting, the only negative comment I got was from a guy who shoots with us who had a right moan about the gun calling it all kinds of names, I looked at him and said "next week I will bring a ****** pump action", semis are cool, if you shoot well with one, use it. Floating Chamber
Fortunately, I shoot at a club where semi-autos out-number any others. For Skeet and Sporting, I can't see a problem, because I'm in a 'cage', but for DTL and Ball Trap, my Winchester Model 50 could take an eye out with an empty shell at 20 feet! (That's why I don't use it! for these disciplines.)
Lucent
Afternoon all, I have a Teknys semi and a Browning O/U. I tend to use the semi for sporting and the O/U for UT or DTL. I have not met any hostility using the semi for sporting and the club i go to is considered "well posh". Trust me they sell caviar flavoured coffee. That said, i always pick the shells up and sheath it between stands (like a gentleman) :~) I think as long as you are safe and dont wave it around once you have finished shooting, and always carry barrel up, you should be okay! There are always some people who will take issue with something but they are bores whos opinions are largely decorative. I hope this helps Luc. 08shooter
use what you shoot best with and ignore the off comments.dtl cant stop you shooting with a semi.they might refuse to shoot on your line but thats their loss.i ll shoot my semis all day long and there ain t no one going to stop me. fullbore
so how come they dont sell barrell flags for rifles then? And none of my rifles bend in the middle
berettaman1
Not really the same thing is it, at a clay shoot there is often 80 to 100+ shooters walking about, where as when you are out with your rifle you are probally on your own,! I shoot 100 registered every week, with a auto but I put it into the the slip between stands, the guys you encounter with a flag hanging out of the breech, are usually not carrying a slip to put their gun in between stands, and are just trying to show fellow shooters that the breech is open and safe. Cheers.
pokey
I use a beretta 303 for pigeons and clay's as soon as I stop shooting on the stand straight into the sleeve not a word said if anyone has a pop I wait to get back to the start where all the o/u are lent up in the racks and ask if they are loaded or un loaded people don't know
Hardy
At the shooting grounds I go to there are a lot of people using semi's and I've never seen anyone have problems, although I don;t shoot trap where I could see the spent cartidges being annoying. The only word of warning I'd offer is that some grounds have mesh on thier cages which means the empty shells have a habit of bouncing back into your face which is very offputting for the 2nd target - I think that was the last time my Beretta 303 got an airing!! throdgrain
An old debate this FWIW I dont even own an O/U any more, I use my Benelli M2 mostly for clays, hell these days I mostly leave the sling on too, I dont get any mardy remarks. I even use a pump action as well from time to time, just to make it hard for myself
J@mes
If anyone gives you grief just tell them that you want to get used to the gun before you use it in the field - and that its not right to be "pricking" birds because you havent had any practice with the gun. surely no-one can argue with that? berettaman1
James, why should he have to excuse himself for his choice of gun??. Throdgrain, my friend, you should remember your money is exactly the same as **** with a posh O/U, If they make comments , then just reply ****** you *****. berettaman1
As he has posted on Clay Shooting I naturally asumed he was a Clay shooter??. If not then I have made a mistake?

J@mes
Yes Yes Yes, I have shot for my Country , And won many ,many, county titles in the last few years,(using a Beretta Auto,) so? perhaps I might just have the edge?? on your skill over mine??? I dont really want to mention my trophyies won at the Beretta World Sporting events over the last few years,... or my trophies won in the British Home international Events, Or indeed the awards as a team member at the WORLD SPORTING COMPS in the UK, AND THE USA, .. As I am sure your achievements far,... far,... exceed mine,...And that gives you,? the right to make my replies on this subject seem worthless!! Well done,!!! please tell us what you have won, in your undoughted Knowledge in this level,? and I will drop out of this advice forum...CHEERS!! WE ALL AWAIT YOUR AMAZING RECORD!!! erm, now lets see. as far as I am aware, this is a forum for open discussion on subjects that are deemed appropriate by the moderators and owners of the forum. So, we are discussing the use of semi-autos at clay grounds. Yes, you pay your money and have as much right to use any gun as anyone else, BUT, a bit like new members on forums shouldnt kick against the grain of the older members, sometimes it is worth just politely explaining the use of your chosen weapon rather than telling everyone to **** off! great way to make friends in a new club, kick against everyone and tell them to **** off. Yes congratulations, you have won many awards for your shooting ability, and I have won none. I have had two lessons, and am still learning. so no, i cant compete with you on that level. what I am trying to offer the original poster is another side to the argument. as I said, telling everyone to **** off isn't the way to get on in life. If my replies make you feel worthless and that you want to remove yourself from this forum, then i suggest that your "problems" are far more deep seeded than anything I have said to you. but, as a new shooter and someone who is planning to use a semi at a clay ground, I wont be telling my tutor or any members to **** off, but probably appeasing them by explaining my reasoning for using one in order to make the clay shooting and my social time at the club a much more relaxed affair.
