ShaggyRS6
Anyone close to me fancy coming round m Gaff on Saturday to chainsaw a Conifer down? You will obviously need to own a Chainsaw
Mungler
Lol. The connifer gets it to make way for the Ferret Court. I have a lovely 20" chainsaw purchased off ebay for a very similar occasion. You are welcome to borrow it but there is no chance of me attempting to dig the roots out. That being said, you should actually consider running a hose round the base of the connifer day and night before hand (on a good dribble), lopping enough off the top to make it manageable and then fixing a tow rope to the landy and pulling the root ball out. It just might work dammit.
ShaggyRS6
I think the roots are actually unde the garage, so what I need to do once the b@gger is down is to then dig below ground level and then chop it off again, drill a whole and fill it wit that gunk stiff you can get to kill he root, then pull it out a year later. Mungler
Conifer roots are actually "balls" and certainly stretch no further than the canopy. You ought to be okay. But hey, it's not my garage or my landy
al4x
If I was closer I would, As for Mungler I'd be scared of a lawyer with a chainsaw Oh and once its cut off don't worry about poisoning it it'll die anyway Edited January 31, 2008 by al4x
ShaggyRS6
Ok, to tempt you. There is now 2 Boxes of Clay carts to the person who turns up and gets rid of it. Thats 20 x 25 Carts I think.
Edward
The best way as Mungler said is to chop it off half way and pull the stumps out, make sure you leave atleast 2meters of stump, I had to use a tractor to pull the roots out. ShaggyRS6
Dont panic all. Alex my Falconer freind is gonna pop over, he only lives down the road and could do with some logs for his fire Thanks for the offer Mungler. BSA Shaun
Hahaha, no, with a Shotty. My Audi will be less than 10ft away from the tree, sooo, ermmm, errrrr As long as the wedge is cut out in the right direction and you rope it, you won't have any dramas. But yeah keep LB clear
Zapp
Damn, if you had been closer (and I mean lots closer), I'd have been there like a shot! The woodpile is starting to get a little low... Zapp
al4x
be careful if he burns it shaggy they leave loads of tar up the chimney if they aren't really dry, I'd not put it on mine and thats a log burner with liner. I have to contend with burning the house that I'm doing up at the moment  well it seems a shame to waste all the stud walls
ShaggyRS6
Yeah I will tell him about the Tar. What I intend to do is rope it to the Landy so it will fall away from NExt door.
Ferret Master
I would have put my Dad's name forward but last time he cut a conifer down for a neighbour he nearly killed himself falling off a step ladder onto a fencepost with a metal bit on. Impressive scar down the length of his chest though. And he's supposed to make a living out of doing this sort of thing... I would imagine the conifer will be OK to burn but tell your friend to take care if he has an open fire as it will spark like the devil and burn up quite quick. al4x
is it that big? its not normally hard to drop conifers exactly where you want them

paulf
Thats nothing, cut the lower branches off to head height then cut yur feling notch then make your backcut a small wedge or for a balanced tree like that simply pushing it with your shoulder and itll bowl over. If i was local to you are sort it.
Zapp
That shouldnt be a problem. Like you said, rope it to your landy and put it under tension in the direction of fall once you have cut the wedge. Then get someone to lean on the rope/strap as you make the downcut and as soon as it starts to go get rope/strap person to pull it in the direction you want it to fall, hand over hand. I felled 5 connifers this summer which were 7-8 metres high in this way with no dramas. Hope it all goes well! Zapp
ShaggyRS6
Thanks Guys. For information I am standing against the Landy's bonnet in that piccy, so its nicely placed
BSA Shaun
That will fell easy as Paul has said, get your notch in it to persuade it to fall in the right direction, and a rope towards the top and give it a pull, no need for the landy, just remember to get out of the way at the opportune moment Or push it, doubt the trunk is even that thick

al4x
thats a doddle shaggy, no need for the landy as said lop the bottom branches off notch it and it'll push over easily enough with no problem. I did one recently about the same distance from the house that was 15 ft over the chimney stack. That was interesting even with a cherry picker
