What are you using as a base for the rifle when shooting targets?

Bipod, bag, rest???

EDIT: Also what distance are we talking here and how low and how left.

I like to get rid of any shooter errors before I blame the set up

off bi pod prone 100yds as i do with all my rifles and the drift can vary upto 3-4 inc either way down left right very rarely high ave even clamped in a bench rest same result tends to settle a little as it warms up for a clip then its off again i have waited till cool have tried continual shooting i am lost my next option was my sthil saw.:lol::lol:

If you'd bother to look at the sender's account you would see he was banned and has been for a full week, and if you'd also bother to research it you would see that he was a troll on the forums. Who also went by the names of Justjoshing,balaclave,flight-path,merkel,purdey,****you, all of which have been banned. The was nothing to do with this incident- which we did not know about until now- how exactly are we supposed to read private messages?? Are we supposed to be psychics??

I hate the way people jump onto a bandwagon and start spouting out a load of rubbish and I'm looking at you: wy111. You've thrown a lot of **** in this thread and it's all been false, if you dislike here so much you're prepared to post unsubstantiated garbage then pack your bags mate.

i did have better joy with the cci but they kept jamming

3-4 inches is alot and id be looking for my money back tbh.

Try without the mod on as well if you have one.

To go about fixing it i reckon what you'll need to do is make sure the barrel is floated ie not touching off the stock first.

To do that take the barreled action out of the stock and sand the barrel channel with some sand paper until you can put the action back in without the barrel touching and wood (should be able to slide a piece of paper around the barrel the whole way down without it sticking).

If that doesnt work and i think your main problem is this is a bad crowning on the end of the barrel. This is a job for a gunsmith or you can buy tools from brownells afaik but hard thing to get right but id say this is your problem. Have a good look to see if you can see and problems (should be completely symetrical) Post a pic up as well.

Forgot to mention is this happening after cleaning or when is it happening???

I used to read posts about 'Shooting A Gun In', and used to wonder what this was all about. I've had various 223, 22-250, 17 Rem, and 'out of the box' (after working out a decent load) I have always managed to get decent groups - which to me is 0.5" or better at 100 yards.

and then I bought a 17 hmr.......

I bought what I thought was the best - an Annie thumbhole stock. It drove me absolutely bonkers. For what it is worth these are lessons that I have learned from mine:-

1) Try various types of ammo - mine is best with Hornady 17g. It is hopeless with any 20g hp.

2) It is useless for at least 5-10 rounds after cleaning. Do not clean too often; only when accuracy starts to fall off.

3) If you are on a range you must not let the barrel overheat. Take it steady and give it a couple of minutes after each shot. After each shot keep the bolt back to aid cooling.

4) After 300 rounds or so it started to improve and I have now probably shot 1500 rounds or so.

5) Ignore claims of 0.25" groups. From my own experience and what I have read you may on occasion get 0.5", but 0.75" is the norm.

6) Don't even bother to try and get decent groups with any kind of wind - the bullet is too light and badly affected by wind.

Hope that this helps

Don

I would say the normal average 100 yd group is 1" though .......I have had tighter but can count them on 2 hands .

3-4" group is an indication of something wrong not the ammo and previous posters are correct with checking the scope ,mounts and moderator .In fact is there damage to one side of the exit hole of the mod .A simple DIY recrowning without using a lathe is a marble and silicon carbide paste .

Have you a decent close up pic of the crown btw

My CZ came close to being wrapped around a fence post many a time in it's early days but now it's an absolute tack driver and I ain't touching nowt until that situation changes .

have you cleaned your rifle since you had it, it could be suffering from copper fouling!

Ian

scope/ mounts

it has been cleaned barrel and silencer the lot and have changed scopes and mounts this is just one of those things some of you have had too it seems,

but i must say hand on heart some great advice and i will be trying all aspects of your suggestions the crown appears fine i took it to local gun shop a bit back and they said seemed finetoo.

thanks all :yes::yes::yes:

I've been suffering exactly the same problems with my CZ 17HMR 16" Varmint, not been getting anythin better than 3-4" groups, been using remmy accutips, same as i've always used in my 22-250, but today have floated barrel, taken everything apart and put back together, making sure everything was nice and tight. Used federal ammo this afternoon and its now achieving 1" groups on average. I've now put approx 2-300 rounds through it, think its slowly getting better though.. perhaps it could just be a case of getting it "run in"..?

the cz i had was excatly the same i tried changing every bit of the rig, floated the barrel, trigger kit but it would not hold a group ,in the end i gave up sold it brought a hw60 and that shoots like a dream, funny thing was a mate brought a cz the same time as mine and turned out his needed re-crowning, i dont like to rubbish czs because i know they build some great rifles i really like there 223 but a SMALL percentage of the hmr have problems.
