the_commoner
hi all, fairly newbie here. quick question if i may...............how long do you leave your rabbits before sorting them for the pot ? i tend to give em a squeeze in the field to make sure they aint gonna wet the bed on the way home and then gut, skin and joint them when i get home and into the freezer............this can be as little as 45 mins after they have been shot i have heard a few people say that they leave em hang ? if so how long do you leave them ?? not sure if what i am doing is right cheers

If they have been shot with a shotgun. Gut them asap. If they have been ferreted or head shot with a rifle the way you are doing it is fine. Personally I have never hung rabbits, but get them in the freezer asap. But as long as the weather is cold there will be no harm in hanging them for a few days. If that will improve the taste is another matter. I think you cannot beat a rabbit killed and eaten the same day. TC
the_commoner
cheers guys, just wanted to check........i presume the only reason you would hang them is purely for flavour / tenderness
bob300w
i gut them at the end of a seshon them put them skin them when i get home and put them in the freezer untill i need them Only thing that I would add to that is, put your dog in the motor before you gut them, even my cocker, who is more fussy about her food than my old woman, will eat rabbit guts whilst they are warm.(the cocker that is). stubby
Id suggest you gut them in the feild at the end of the trip, on getting home I chop the head and feet off, they fit in the chest freezer better, but leave the fur on, this stops them sticking together, then taken out 24hrs before you need them, also when I return home with 20 plus rabbits, I empty whats in the freezer, put new ones at bottom, frozen ones at top, Edited March 16, 2008 by stubby
Bigbob
Roughly the same here ,we chop there heads and feet off wrap them in a poly bag then freeze them when there defrosting i pop them in a plastic box and the poly bag catches most of the blood .But i dont take the old ones out the freezer to pop the fresh rabbits in it would be like a jigsaw puzzle i wouldn't get them back in .
