njc110381
I'd have sat and watched it eat. Fair enough if you wanted the bird for yourself, I just like birds of prey! I have some Buzzards on my shoot that take the odd Rabbit I've hit. I really like to sit and watch them, they're stunning birds up close
cloudwalker
Sparrow Hawk strikes again by the sound of it I had a similar experience last year. Shot a pigeon and it landed in the next field. Unfortunately I had only pricked it and it was flapping around. As I clambered over the gate to get to it, down came A Sparrow Hawk and started to pluck the poor Pigeon alive I got within 10 foot before it flew off and I could finish off the Woodie. It was done a favour as even a trace amount of lead is enough to kill a BOP. When a lead pellet passes through a birds body it leaves a residue, that residue alone is enough to kill a BOP. HeadShotHoncho
I've heard of people shoot pigeons and then a bird of prey snatch it out of the air, i've shot a pigeon out a tree and it land behind a wall and then went round and there was a buzzard greedily scrutinizing it which **** one when i gave it a good yelling at HSH
triscrx
I have often seen Buzzards dropping on pigeons including onto my flapper!! Awesome birds to watch though I often leave birds wings out on their backs and they soon drop in for them. One had a go at a rabbit I hit the other week as well and ate all the meat off one of the legs before flying off.
Chard
If this climate change thing keeps going, we'll probably end up with Black Kites nesting over here, then you'll have to bolt down your sandwiches, because they'll fly down and nick them They're cheeky ********. In Australia, and lots of other places, they regularly nick food from peoples plates when they're eating outside. They nest just over the Channel, in France, Belgium and Holland and they're getting increasingly common visitors here. I watched one in Hampshire years ago and it was a major rarity then. We had one in Cheshire a couple of years ago and in the last couple of years they're getting quite regular in England. It's only a matter of time, if a pair bump into each other, or they cross the Channel together, they'll take up residence :) Edited April 1, 2008 by Chard
Quickshot
Chard,, That looks like a buzzard to me I Have been shooting pigeons on the edge of a wood, over rape and obviously there was a hungry fox in the woods because as quick as i was shooting them, the fox was coming and taking them into the wood! The little ***** must have taken 8 or 10 pigeons! Unfortunately i broke my camera on the last outing so didnt get a picture. I was speaking to someone in the village who said their next door neighbour feeds it! Needless to say i was gobsmacked! looks like he will be the target for a nights lamping soon! Chard
Chard,, That looks like a buzzard to me Not a Buzzard, mate. Triangular tail makes it a Kite, Buzzard has rounded fan shape. Lack of fork in the tail means it's not a Red Kite Edited April 2, 2008 by Chard
malkiserow
am I right in thinking the black kite is also known as a "sh.te hawk" due to them scavenging anything and everything edible?
