Decoying over rape

Hi,

Me and Stillsy met up yesterday morning as I intended to take him to my local clay shoot. After a 50 bird sporting round there which took much longer than normal due to trap problems and a larger group of people than normal due to some nice weather we set off to his house. We then met up with Jon from this forum as well and after a few minutes speaking we went to check out a few different fields in the two cars. :D

The first field drew a blank with virtually no birds around however the second field which had a hedge seperating 2 fields of rape looked more promising. There were about 40 birds in the trees and approximately 100 more feeding on the field. We decided to set up here with Jon and Stillsy's Dad setting up in one field with a few decoys and myself and Stillsy setting up in the other field with a magnet and about 30 plastic decoys. The decoys were arranged in a rough horseshoe pattern with the magnet at the front of the pattern. Our hide was at the base of an established tree in the hedgeline. We had a pair of birds come in before we even had our guns out so they escaped unharmed.

We then heard a shot from behind us and Jon had folded a very high bird with the first barrel. :P Me and Stillsy decided in the interests of safety to take it in turns to shoot. I had my Beretta Silver Pigeon 20 bore and he had his camo Hatson Escort 12 bore. We then had another bird come into our pattern with its eyes set firmly on the magnet but I snagged my barrel while mounting the gun and the bird swerved to our right however I managed to drop it with a quick snapshot into the hedge. :hmm: It was then Stillsy's turn and he shot another bird coming into the pattern. My turn again and I shot another bird over the deeks. I thought I was getting the hang of this decoying lark until I fluffed the next 6 shots. Stillsy stayed on form however and dropped another half a dozen birds before kindly offering to let me have a go with his 12. I then shot at a bird coming into the pattern but only clipped it but managed to cleanly drop it a second later in a cloud of feathers. Also managed to hit the next bird with this gun as well so with my confidence back up I swapped to my 20 bore again.

Myself and Stillsy suceeded in dropping a few more birds each. Probably helped by the fact that his Dad was walking around the other field putting birds up. :hmm: Jon then came over to join us in our hide as the birds were not that interested in his decoys compared to the pulling power of the magnet. He managed to bag a couple of birds in our hide and I hit a long crosser stone dead as well as a second barrel bird which I think there is video footage of. Me and Stillsy also shared a suicidal bird but I will let him fill you in on that. :P

A good day was had by all and I would like to thank Stillsy for inviting me out on his permission and Jon for the lift. Was good to meet you. :hmm:

We finished the day with 20 birds picked (could you confirm Jon/Stillsy?) but Jon already had his birds from earlier in his car and the bag also has some deeks from a previous session.

good write up ollie! we had a good day, we both just need to tune our shooting skills on that bird that decoys absolutly perfectly, a few to many got away. With ollie's good shooting at the end boosted our bag up, i think we picked 20 and with 2 unpicked! all in all a very good day!

Yeh I seemed to get the hang on the slower decoyed birds near the end. :hmm: You shot well though. :hmm:

See you soon.

Well basically this bird decoyed perfectly, and i stood up and shot it, it was come downish, and the feathers came out,but it was going on a bit, so i put another at it, and it turned and flew straight over our hide (slow and low), me and ollie absolutly nailed in mid air at the same time!
