Chard
I would see it through at college, even if you end up doing something else. At least, if you qualify at that, you'll have something to fall back on.
Big_Sam
Heck mate keep at it, you might not enjoy it now but when you get to work on a real job and see the results of your labour it is much more worth it. Plus you get paid far too much to do far too little

malkiserow
HI Russ, How long have you been at college? How long to go until the end of the course? What are you marks like? Hunter
Pretty much the same step as you, but since changing my attitude to the whole college thing I have started getting somewhere. (studying for the Police as a career ) I have over 5 years college experaince since leaving college, and have gained: IMI motor vehicle repair IMI ICT NVQ Building Maintenance -Carpentry -Bricklaying City and Guilds(?) Welding operations -Qaulified TIG, Gas, Mig, Arc, Gas cutting ORC Public Uniformed Services -Fitness (public services entry requirments level and over) -Academic issues 6 months City and Guilds Machine Shop (no certificate) -Metal Lathe operation -Milling machine operation -Metalwork hand tool operation -Design operations GCSE's of varius descriptions Working on: Padi Diving OW training course (scuba diving, for hobby reasons) Static line Parachute (solo jump hobby related) Public Services Level 3 (work) Chainsaw Certificate (work) DSC Level one (work, hobby) Plenty of training and certificates I have, yet I still dont have a proper job and feel probably just as lost as you. The only jobs I have found are working for the Police, Armed Services, or part time retention fire officer. Either that or jack it all in and go abroad for work. I am also experianced in Blacksmithing work, (was a teacher for 12 months too) and estate maintenance, I drive small tractors, mowers, operate strimmers, etc etc) Just keep at college. I hate it, it stinks of chavs, I dont trust a single person in the whole college, but at the end of the year I get the certificate, and experaince, which may help with a future job. And thats priceless experiance. Il probably never make it to the police due to my maths (GCSE E ) but its something to work to, and have hope for.. if you dont have an aim, you will not have anything to work for. Left School at the age of 16, now 19 and earning about £200-300 per month just scraping by to afford the hobbies I do, but no where near enough to pay for my own flat. I dont know if I will do another year after this in college or not. Edited April 2, 2008 by Hunter

As I have said on here before russ- consider becoming a welder and then every other trade just becomes just an extension to your tool box Putting on me hard hat and flak jacket as I finish this post
Chard
I still think it's worth putting up with a year or two of being skint, if it means you have a trade to fall back on. It'll soon pass, and as Roadkill says, you could get a job behind a bar or something, to pad out your finances

Hunter
Pretty much the same step as you, but since changing my attitude to the whole college thing I have started getting somewhere. (studying for the Police as a career ) Have you considered M15 yet and 00 status with all that?? Funny you say that my friends look worried when I tell them one of my hobbies is lock picking. (theres a whole online network of us lockpickers :good: ) I do about 4 hours of picking a month, and have managed to pick lock up to Yale anti-pick level security (mushroom pins, very very time consuming and frustrating). Then theres my obsession with GPS and other gadgets relating to outdoor survival and navigation. (off for a survival holiday in the mountains of Romania tomoro wont be around for a couple of weeks) But im not interested in a bond typ of life I see myself as a min wage worker somewhere, work hard, sweat hard... none of that office work all day long. :o Russ, keep at it, seriously. And if nothing works out for you, consider going abroad for work, work at a holiday resort, be a flight attendant, travel around a bit.. do it while you are young, have some fun, then get down to finding a serious job. I would be out there traveling myself, but to be honest I find travel stressful and non amusing :o But my Bro is out in Aussie on a motorbike, riding from one town to another, finding work and places to sleep, to pay fro his fuel food, and clothes. And hes having a great time. I feel a bit left out at home sometimes.. Edited April 2, 2008 by Hunter

paulf
All these qulifications and stuff make me wonder, trouble is half are worthless in term of real world employment, I walked out of a forestry coures (HNC )after 2 years knowing it was unlikely to help me further due to a lack of job opurtunites at sensible pay. Even whilst at colledge I was doing two part, time jobs. A further year of full time workas an optical technician and ijacked it all in and became self employed. Im 25 now and aside from NPTC chainsaw and spraying tickets and BPCA lvl 2 pest control technician have no real qulifications yet Ive my own thriving business, I doubt finishing my colledge course would have benefited me a jot. What ever choice you make it wont be the end of the world, however important it seems now.

Hunter
Been there myself. I dod a joinery qaulification and all they are interested in is seeing you write up 2 pages on H&S and the correct PPE to be worn while working, and then 1-2 pages on the actual work you carried out.. most of it was copy+paste as I had to do a 5 page assignment for every joint we did.. boring.. but the practical part in college was good, making numerous joints out of Canadian Pine. The tools were pants.. saws blunt, chisels and planes with chipped edges, what a joke! but we got there somehow
