17HMR Round Passed Right Through???

Recommended Posts

Anyone seen this? I shot a baby yesterday, at about 60 yards. I got it right in the middle of body with ballistic tip, I saw a puff of fur, i even saw the entry, the ****** just continued to run. In fact i watched it in and out the trees for a good 20 mins, it was still going strong when i left, although never in a position to finish it off.

Never seen that before.

The TNT 17 gr hollow points are giving me pass throughs on hares no matter where I hit them aside from one which I hit quartering on and it lodged along the spine almost at the hip (the lead core still exited, the copper jacket did not). Not terribly concerned as they do a tremendous amount of damage on the way through.

In your case, I'd say you just grazed it if you saw a puff of fur. Any body shot on a small rabbit should not let it run anyway. Anything in the front half of the body or head will kill it on the spot, in the rear quarters it will not be able to move, and a gut shot would have blown enough guts and liver that it wouldn't have gone far. You just grazed it across the belly is my bet.

thanks

Young ones are remarkably tough, ive shot young ones many times through the head, only to watch them return to their burrows. I read once its something to do with their developing nervous system, which allows them to operate longer once shot than their mature counterparts.

Its weired, as I deffo did not graze it. I was side onto me, directly in front, the shot removed about 1/2 inch of fur. The only thing i can think off is that the round stayed together hit something and went upward, although that seems very unlikely.

I shot a young one about 3 weeks ago from about 60 yards. I hit it and it jumped up. After taking another shot at a longer distance one when i looked for it i couldnt find the 1st one i shot, it although it did jump to the left slightly after being struck. Anyway my mate tried a shot at a rabbit about another 30 yrds away about 10 mins later and as i was watching through my scope it was moving towards a hedge very slowly. When we got up there its insides were hanging out on its left hand side obviously the one i had shot earlier and it made it from the middle of the fairway to the left hand side then back to the right hand side of the fairway trying to get back to its burrow. Some super young rabbit that was. .17hmr v max boat tail ballistic tips!!

Shoot throughs on rabbits dont surprise me, especially on the softer bady areas. It is one of the reasosns I conducted this test to see how the rounds behave. It is by no means scientific but does go to show the little rounds do not simply "explode" as some suggest.

Not sure if that was sarcasm :hmm: So i will answer as if it were not. I had 1 pinger after about 10 kills, then another 2 shots after that

It wasn't mate, I was asking because after a recent outing I couldn't hit **** for several shots then everything settled down nicely :good:

Bell me tomorrow lunchtime shaggy
