Highlander
On the boxes of ammo for a .17HMR it clearly variously states 'Dangeous within 1 3/4 or 2 miles' IMO long range shooting (anything over 200m) in the UK is a no no, besides if you haven't the fieldcraft skills to get close enough you shouldn't be out shooting! Backstop, backstop, backstop.

I have done a problem fox at 400, but I zeroed the 300Win mag at that range and waited for it to come out, it's not difficult.

Highlander
I’d put it on a par with the yanks and their ‘high level’ bombing...it’s simply not cricket Old Boy! IMO anyone with a half decent rifle can shoot out at ranges over 200m but why would you need to unless your fieldcraft abilities are so **** that any poor creature with an ounce of brain power would run a mile before you closed the gap. Surely much of the sport/fun is in getting up close to your quarry without it being aware of you. Or are you like most men who try to kid the female world that 3 ins actually looks like 12! tulkyuk
close is easy, in most cases you dont have to account for trajectory or wind with centrefire rifles - when you start going over 150yrds then these things play a big part in everything you do. Stalking bunnies into rimfire range whilst using a centrefire is 'simply not cricket Old Boy!'

Actually seen more of them than Claude has without a mirror - you lost yours to that fat bird at the weekend Why do threads your involved in keep ending up as **** discussions? So tell us more about the fat bird :hmm: Anyway how did I get dragged into this topic? I've asleep. casts_by_fly
http://www.eskimo.com/~jbm/calculations/calculations.html Everyone should bookmark this page. It has the answers for distance, trajectory, drift, etc. In this case, you're looking a touch under a mile and a half maximum range at sea level and standard atmospheric conditions. You'll get a little bit of change with temperature and elevation changes, but in this country not enough to matter. thanks rick
