mattslaptop247
Just had the neighbour around, she wanted me to collect up a bird her cat had caught. It turned out to be a young partridge. This got me thinking how many birds must get needlesley wasted by cats and how many must get hit by cars? It must run into millions each year! mudpatten
The figure runs into millions every year. Interestingly the RSPB is well aware of this although, since many of its Little Old Lady financial supporters are the owners of said offending cats, it only tackles the problem in a restrained and low key fashion. It`s financially far more lucrative to paint all gamekeepers as raptor exterminating monsters than it is to address the massive bird mortality wrought by the pets of those who pay the staff wages. Bird conservation. Its a funny old game. Nick.
Cranfield
I tend to believe that Nature abhors a vacuum and road kill fatalities are covered by natural population control. However, cats can decimate garden birds over a small area and certain birds are very vulnerable. We have a cat and make sure that all bird feeding stations are placed in non risk areas. Fortunately we have more than enough mice in the surrounding meadow land to satisfy her hunting needs.

harryhawk
I think a couple of years ago one of the conservation groups did a survey of the damage the cat population does and the conclusion was the cute, cuddly, loved family pet was responsible for 300 MILLION DEATHS A YEAR IN THE UK!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o The number was made up of birds, mammals, reptiles, rodents, the list was massive. Now my opinion is that they are vermin and they should be on the general licence I'm also allergic to cat fur, so I'll do the despatching if someone does the picking up

George1990
haha, no you don't. Think I dislike magpies more though. I'm sure they're responsible for the demise in the songbird population round my area. Used to be lots of Linnets and Spotted Flycatchers but haven't seen any the last couple of years... just loads of magpies Well chuffed though as earlier today I chucked 32g of number 6 at one through my 3/4 choke at about 30 yards. He won't be stealing any more eggs
