jonher
Ok, so I've now decided on the rifle, all I need is a scope! I know this is a real can of worms question but I have no experience on rifle scopes so I'm hoping you can point me in the right direction! To be used for small game and some target shooting at the range. Budget around 150 quid - which model/make? - what magnification? - what reticle? Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated Edited September 28, 2008 by jonher

plinker
good quality 3-9 x40 or similar is plenty for a 22lr, you wont need parallax either. simmons wtc 3-10 x50 is a good choice for less than £

THEINVISIBLESCARECROW
6-9x40 is ok. You don't need more. I started with a 6-12x40 Simmons Deerfield. Now got a Simmons 6-24x50 PrairieMaster. I shoot with around 10mag but find the high mag is usefull for spotting or just watching distant wildlife & confirming what I'm aiming at (when hid around the back of the farm waiting for crows to land on the field) Check for 3/8" or 11mm scope rails though, they will catch you out if you get the wrong mounts. Dunkield
Unless you are blind you shouldn't need more than 9x, Personally I prefer quality 7x fixed mag to jam pot bottom quality 16x or 24x variable
magman
stuartp Posted Today, 09:36 AM jam pot bottom quality 16x or 24x variable You never looked through a Viper then Stuart Suits me on my 22 r/f superb reticle for the 22r/f, get to now your gun and headshots at 100 yrds are a common practice
tulkyuk
Try www.midwayuk.com for a WTC 3-10 x50, but (and it really pains me to say this) i Agree with Magman, MTC vipers are a cracking scope for the money. another to think about would be the Nikko Sterling Platinum Nighteater range

I know I did, and then I flogged it and got something better/simpler/clearer.

Does anyone know of any websites with diagrams so I can get an idea of the different levels of magnification? Thanks
wannabefisher
I've got a Nikko Stirling 3-10x56. Can't remember the exact spec or model name (useful I know...!) but it is good for .22. Rarely use mag about 6 or 8.
Dunkield
Does anyone know of any websites with diagrams so I can get an idea of the different levels of magnification? Thanks About half way down the page there is a picture with mag comparisons underneath, not ideal but it may help, you best bet is to look through some scopes, don't buy blind. http://uk.leica-camera.com/nature_observat...ultravid_50_hd/
jonher
Thanks everyone for the advice and to "stuartp" for the link. I'm going to visit a gun store later this week so I can check out a few different scopes and their magnifications. steve_b_wales
The Hawke endurance range are good, as are all the Hawke scopes. You should be able to get a good one for under £100.

If you intend to shoot in low light, try and get to look through the scopes in low light, not always that easy, but definitely worth doing if you can
bazguevara
I've got a Simmons WTC 2-10x44 on mine. I got it off fleabay, sent from the states and I spoke to the guy selling before bidding to make sure that he would send it as a 'gift' to avoid tax. It was brand new and as far as I remember I paid around £70 posted. I find that it gives plenty of magnification and is fairly good in low light. Lloyd90
Get between 5 to 9 x mag n try to get mildot reticle, then you can work out the drop on the 22LR and know where to aim for each distance. FAC should be coming next weekish (I hope lol) and I got a nice rifle lined up with mildot scope
jonher
Ok, Visited my local gun store and had a look through a few scopes to get an idea of the magnification ranges. Decided that I'm going to put a Simmons Whitetail Classic 3-10x50 on the CZ 452 .22LR I'll post some pics in the near future. Thanks for all the advice Jonathan
