Dave-G
I want to take the occasional fox while rabbiting, but as I rarely see one don't really want to down the centre fire route when most of what I shoot any night will be bunny. I never go out specifically for fox. Leicester don't grant fox for rimfire, stating that H/O guidelines are observed so they will only condition C/F for fox. So the least potent option suitable for both seems to be a .22 Hornet. BUT: It's been said elsewhere that the rule only applies to the "good reason to hold" a rifle rather than what's legal to shoot with it. I've always been of the opinion that a "Vermin and ground game" condition that does not mention fox would put me outside of my conditions if I take a close fox with it. I'm trying to find a satisfactory way - within the law to use my Sako Quad, perhaps adding a WMR to it for fox so that I still only possess one rifle. Bear in mind I frequently travel 300 miles between East Leicester and South West Cornwall with my gun(s) and would rather only carry one with three barrels on this journey in particular, but also relevant to whats in my cabinet. Thoughts and suggestions please gents.
Baldrick
.22 WMR is pretty marginal, Dave. I certainly wouldn't want to shoot a big dog fox with one when there are much better alternatives. Your opinion about 'fox' being a separate condition from vermin is correct. Plod won't entertain the notion of foxes being classed as vermin. I would get a .222 or .223 as a fox/vermin rifle and not go down the .22 WMR route. Two dedicated rifles rifles are better than one compromise. .22WMR is also pretty expensive if you are going to run it as a vermin calibre. mr smith
.. Your opinion about 'fox' being a separate condition from vermin is correct. Plod won't entertain the notion of foxes being classed as vermin. Some do,Tayside allow fox under vermin and do not condition for it sperately. The guy told me if you've got vermin on your ticket you can take fox, this was a fairly new decision possibly to save time and effort. So asked .17HMR ok hes says if it's got vermin then yes,.22 ok he says if you got vermin then yes.Thought of pushing it and ask about FAC air even though i don't have one, thought better of it. njc110381
I can't see why you can't just shoot Fox with what you have? Any firearm will down a Fox at close range, but once that range is pushed out I'd be much more comfortable with a C/F than any rimmy. The Hornet would be good if you plan to reload, otherwise I'd say go for a .
bullet boy
I agree with Baldrick and neil-get yourself a centrefire if possible.
tweedledee
plenty of folk in n ireland still using the wmr as its only recently they have allowed centrefires in big numbers.i have a relation who swears by the wmr and has been using it for years.some farms over here don`t have big acreage and the wmr seems to slot in.a lot of folk had tried the hmr but apparently the wmr is still a strong seller. There's nowhere in law that defines fox as vermin and that's the problem. Tayside can say what they want and so long as you're shooting in Tayside you're okay but I hope it's in writing as if anything goes tits up they'll slope shoulders on it. radio1ham
well i got my .243 for vermin and deer by northumbria so guess they class fox as vermin as i actually put fox and deer on aplication form so fox is vermin up this way ive heard of a lot of people on here shooting fox with good success with a 17hmr i guess as long as its a well placed shot then why not some folk shoot them with their .22 rimmys at close range
mosa
northumbria granted my .17hmr suitable for fox as comes under vermin but i also listed use as vermin control & fox. I got it no bother. Still prefer the .223 option though
