Staffys

I've got a Bullmastiff who i'd love to be a gundog, but in reality-he's the wrong breed.Too slow, too stubourn and wont bring balls so not much use in the field! :good: Shame because he's not frightened of gunshot and i've fired right next to him! :yp:

I dont agree that Staffies are nasty. They're a typical terrier-bred to be feisty and wont back down from a challenge.Border terriers are excally the same. You cant dismiss a breed just because they have confidence.

My previous dog was a Rottweiler and at 55kgs was quite big,but he was honestly soft as grease and fantastic around children.Rotties do make exceptional pets and i dont think you'll ever find another breed quite as loyal, but they require a good owner who dont try to use them as a weapon.

How you train and bring up a dog influences its overall behaviour.

i have owned and shown staffs for 7-8 years and im not affraid to say that all staffs have that killer side to there personality`s alot of it is to do with the owners and how the dog is socialized but you go to any dog show and the staffy ring will be the place to see the most aggression im affraid they just have it in them , anyways staffs nowadays are nothin like the breed standard lanky skinny over bread **** !

And that about sums it up - you won't get past instinct I'm afraid, aggression is natural to these dogs and similar breeds, it was bred into them.

Why do you think the low lifes have staffs and similar for some kind of protection? it's because they are so good at it, it comes naturally to them.

no matter how good the dog is around kids, or at being a soft dog..ect...ect.... these dogs are bred with instinct, and that instinct is to hunt and kill.

All mastiffs, terriers, ...ect, are all perfectly designed for the reasons above. Its like buying a racehorse and expecting it not to want to run,

you will more likely find that the owner is more down to it than the breed. unfortunately due to their looks they are the pit-bull replacement they tend to be owned be the dregs of society (although not always the case) and they will be train them to be the vicious animals we see in the news.

if the dregs trained collies or labs to be aggressive, the result would be the same I expect.

Not actually the case, a lot comes naturally to dogs hence you get certain dogs that take to certain behaviour more than others. My pointer points I didn't teach it. You don't have to do more than show the average terrier a rat to get it to kill it. My pointer wouldn't have the natural instinct to do the same. Amazing thing nature how a terrier has it inbuilt to grab by the neck and shake is beyond me.

With the fighting dog breeds they can be extremely well socialised with family and kids etc but you can get a switch flipped and the dogs can do a lot of damage fast.

The banned breeds in the UK can be even worse and at the time of the banning my dad who is a vet was looking after a number of quarantine kennels that took them in and the stories behind many was simply frightning.

I'd not trust the average Bull Terrier at all and certainly not arround my dog let alone children. It takes one moment for a death to occur yet if you had the same moment with a collie or lab etc it would be a bits not a savaging. The fact a lot of these dogs appeal to the dodgier chav element of society makes the problems worse. I was in the pub a while back and had a pit bull pup come in that the owner took delight in winking and saying it was a long legged Irish staffie, I said oh a pit bull and she said thats what my vet thinks as well

As for teaching one as a gun dog well unless you're into hunting wild boar we don't have much shooting wise to use them for in the uk

I was not suggesting for one moment that you (in particular) as a Staff owner are a low life - I thought it had already been established in this thread that not all Staff owners are low lifes - but also it has already been established that a bull breed is the most likely dog to be owned by that type of person for their image, and that's because of the dogs reputation.

Poor reply imo.

i think till youve owned one you cant really coment its like saying everyone who ownes a basball cap is a chav?? i have a 2 staffys and there fine i also have working cockers and they all get on fine no matter what anyone says it is all down to the owner its like saying a baby whos dad and grandad are boxers is going to be born a boxer which obviously is not true

also staffys are one of the most abandoned dogs in the uk because idiots buy them to make them look good then throw them out when they realise there not a toy

any dog will be nasty if mistreated and not looked after i think it is misguided and ignorante to say you that all staffys are born to be nasty when there not

and to get back to the original disscussion i have seen in a shooting mag staffys being used for ducking for retreiving

There's nothing wrong with a well brought up staffy. Ive been around bull terriers all my life, the last 1 i had was rescued at 6 months old.He had a broken front ankle, his hip was smashed and he had cigarette burns all over him,and you could count every rib,This would make a lot of dogs real nasty. He was the most loyal affectionate dog i have ever met, fabulous with the kids, mothered the cat so much she was soaked is slaver and played with the rabbits in the garden.. not ONCE did he ever attack another dog or person.ChrisNicholls i'm not a low life!!!! How you could say that we are all low life's without meeting every staffy owner in the country i don't know..I love all dogs, Like i have said i have been around bull terriers all my life this includes the American pit bull, and the only dog that has ever bitten me was a golden Labrador. Its all about how an animal is brought up and how he or she is socialized, any dog can be aggressive and that's down to how the owner has brought it up..

But!!!! I wouldnt want one as a gun dog..

Why!!! because they will tire to early, if your working the dog over many hours a staffy couldn't take the pace, You need the right tool for the right job

I wish people would read posts properly before passing comments with no foundation.

For the record and before anybody else jumps down my throat about Staffs being the first choice of low lifes - it was first mentioned in post #47 before I had even posted on this thread.

Unfortunatley the staffy seems to be the chav/scrote/thug's choice of dog at the moment.

chav/scrote/thug's to me means low lifes, a term in common use. I would like to think that nobody who is a member here falls into this bracket, being of course fine upstanding members of the gun owning community.

obviously every dog is different as are people some of us love staffys and some obviously dont lol so i think everyone should agree to disagree before this turns into an argument as it will because people on here including me have staffys i dont mind if people dont like them but i must admit with all the negative press they get off people its almost as if people look at you and automaticaly think you must be an idiot to own one i myself got mine from a rescue centre and he was almost dead he was that thin but had him about a year now and he is back to normal weight and is fine and dandy

chris921 i agree 100% you will never get every 1 on here to agree or disagree on this subject, and its should end before it gets out of hand..ChrisNicholls i wasn't meaning for my comments to sound like i was jumping down your throat,it wasn't meant to come across like that.as i have found out on here b4 sometimes you need to think a little more on what your putting up on here b4 you do, its just us staffy owners get cheesed off being type cast because of the breed of dog we have

I got one

Hey my name is jake I was attacked by a staffie for no reason, my owner had me on the lead and rescued me from this nasty dog that was trying to rip my throut out. Why cant I walk or have a little run in the park without me being scarred of getting attacked, all I want to do is learn and play.
