GJUK
Hi all It's been 3 ish weeks since I send off my form for a SGC. So I phoned the police to see how it was going. The nice lady advised me that the application has now been passed to the officer for my area and he will be contacting me to make an appointment 'soon'. I assume this means the checks have been carried out and they're happy with the results? Thanks, Jon
kingo
They carry out initial checks then its forwarded to the FEO for your area, when he comes he will bring paperwork with him ie any intelligence reports that refer to your house or next door or you if any and any other police reports, he or she will check that you are suitable for a gun and not a raving looney and ask about why you want the gun, its just usual stuff, if you have got this far and they are visiting you I would not worry, I know my FEO so my visit was more of a chat and cup of tea and for him to fill in his bits off paperwork oh and to check my cabinet was ok. Here is a tip have your cabinet fitted before he visits otherwise when it is authorised u will have to wait for the SGC to be sent to your FEO who will then make an appointment to come and view your cabinet before handing over the SGC and if he is busy this could delay it even further, if its fitted before hand they will post out straight to you... Imperfection
He'll also be checking the crime in your area too.Ask him if there are any local burglaries recently cos he'll know if there is!
GJUK
Thanks guys. I'm nervous about the whole thing, for absolutely no reason. . Thanks, Jon
Imperfection
Its nothing to be nervous about.He/she just wants to be satisfied you're a sane person and will take care of guns in your care.Shake their hand when they introduce themselves, offer coffee/tea and make sure they have somewhere comfortable to sit.I would like to say mine went this well, but my dog launched himself at the FAO to say hello when he walked in which was a great icebreaker! Ean76
Don't forget to remove any skirting board and carpet when fitting yer cabinet. Install it as per the instructions and your FEO won't rip it off the wall and say "2 weeks on Tuesday okay for a re-visit?". Not that it happened to me.... TheHunter
Ask to see his ID then ring up the station to double check it is him. That should set you both off on the right foot.

Yeah but if the FEO is not happy with your location of the cabinet and the arrangements he will delay you anyway. I am new here as you can see and eventually want to get a shotgun licence once I get more experience with a shotgun, so I will probbaly complete an application form sometime in march/april next year. I have some questions about securing a gun cabinet beacsue I have identified some places in my house where it could go, the loft, which I have heard some FEO told people off about because of the difficulty of securing weapons. Also in my room I have a plce where I can put it by the window, but I don't have any built in furniture so I would have to conceal it with like a cloth and put stuff on it to make it look like a cd rack. I am not sure what I should do.
GJUK
CLAIMED! Welcome to the forum. I took the risk of fitting a cabinet, to a brick wall, in a corner, opersite a window but in a wardrobe (I acutally used one of those ikea pine frame and fabric 'wardrobes'). Did the job anyway.

It does need to be out of sight though, and covering with a cloth prob wouldn't be acceptable. You'll get loads of tips and advice on here, but bottom line is that it's the FEO who'll make the decision so give him a call and have a chat through your options - they're generally very helpful and approachable and won't mind you ringing. Guest
OK so it seems I need to have a built in wardrobe fitted. The problem is that my room is limited for space, I would preferably need a slimline cupboard that is roughly bigger than the size of the cabinet. I have researched on the internet and I found some slimline cupboards which I can fit wheels on, so I can maneouvre them over the cabinet and conceal it. Would the cupboard need to be secured also or only to CONCEAL the shotgun cabinet? Edited December 5, 2008 by Guest
al4x
don't worry too much, the onus is to be away from areas that visitors see straight away and in an area easy to access so you're more likely to lock the gun away straight away. If its in your own room is it upstairs? if so then it should be fine without a cupboard arround it. As long as it is well fixed and a decent cabinet you should be fine. My house is the least secure one going yet I was fine with it as it was well secured and in an out of the way place and a decent cabinet. Guest
Yes the location is in my own room by the window. Generally visitors don't come into my room unless invited. I live just myself with my mum so no danger of kids coming into contact with my gun. Plus we don't get a lot of visitors and if we do they usually stay in the living room or kitchen. Then again I will see what the feo will say when I make an application and he comes to visit. Thanks al4x for your advice. Sorry GJUK for hijacking your thread, I will make another one soon with some concerns/questions of mine for when I will be applying for my licence. Drive By
I'm sure someone will disagree with this BUT when I had my 'visit' the chap said that it didn't matter where is was located as long as it was securely bolted down. He even mentioned that he'd known people to have it in their lounge and have wall-papered it so it didn't stand out to much. I guess its down to their individual discression. Mine is in my office not hidden just securely fitted with raw bolts & my FAO couldn't pull it off the wall and not for the want of trying.
