How did we get on today? 2009 edition.

Recommended Posts

If you want to tramp around the country every weekend shooting 1000's of cartridges and putting even more miles on your car for the odd £50 class win and the ability to say I am an AA shooter then fill yer boots.

I can shoot 2 - 3 times a week within a 15 mile radius of where I live(even more if I travel another 20 miles) and I enjoy doing so. I love clay shooting with a passion but I do not have the time or money to shoot all over the country.

My competetive shooting is in the form of Target rifle (fullbore) and that is what I would love to represent my country at. However it is even more elusive than a registered sporting shoot in Essex and with each round now costing 83p it is also expensive.

I do keep records of my shooting and my average is fairly steady at the moment.

I don't know whether we all keep records of our "progress" but I do

The following dates and scores show the gradual creeping upwards of my personal best out of 100 Sporting. A painfully slow upwards journey until this year, when I have gained confidence and decided that I would like to take this sport further than just a weekly craic with the lads.

Apr 2005 - 74

Jul 2005 - 78

Feb 2006 - 80

Jul 2006 - 82

Aug 2008 - 84

Dec 2008 - 84

May 2009 - 85

Jun 2009 - 90

Jun 2009 - 92

Nothing wrong with a weekly craic with the lads of course, but I can see now that it doesn't do much for your scores

:lol::hmm:

The time and money would scupper me eventually, I have to say

I couldn't afford to spend more of either than I do at the moment, so that will always be a limiter.

I still reckon there's plenty of room for improvement without breaking the bank though :hmm:

It hurts blanking a stand because I am letting myself down. I know I can shoot. I know I can hit the clays. I hate getting a low score because I want to be good enough to hit what I aim at each and every time I pull the trigger.

Scores mean nothing to me except as a means of seeing how far I have progressed along the path to that goal. From Saturday's experience, I still have a long way to go.

jersey ferry or irish ferry. thats as far as you go now. you will pay most of costs. theirs them that want it and them that dont. up to the individual but if they are doing the shoots its pretty obvious they will go. cant see many turning down an england team place, after all, if your on the team your prob in top 100 sporting clay shooters in world.

Why pay £5 more for competition when you've got no chance of getting any prize cos there's a bunch on bandits putting in scores in the high eighties in C class  - sort out the class system or the grounds that allow this, then i'll stop birds only. Otherwise its a complete waste of money

birds only is for shooters who are scared of competition

Complex business this birds only, it's a very individual thing and, in my humble opinion, there isn't really a right or wrong answer. I know shooters who never go comp because they are either too mean or hard up (they always claim hard up but in most cases I suspect the former!)

I do get aggreived like Bigweed that there are some people who appear to be shooting 2 classes above themselves week in and week out but they should at least be moved up in 6 months time, only to be replaced by another set of budding Digweeds :good: probably.

For myself I enter the competitions 99 times out of a hundred, I shoot an 86 in A class, don't pick-up a penny and spend all week swearing that it's B/O from now on. Come Sunday it's out with the extra £5 'cos what's the point in entering if there's no goal. I know, I know I'm just supposed to be trying to beat myself (not in that sort or way, I've never even been to Essex) or the mates I shoot with but the majority ain't wired that way, we want to be and seen to be the best among our peers.

I don't even like shooting practice except perhaps the occasional Wednesday, we used to go up to Blackpool Gun Club for their monthly 100 bird comp, when we first started it was registered, then it wasn't and about 12 months ago they stopped the comp due to lack of entries, the ground would be quite busy and the comp entries would be in single figures! My mates and I don't go anymore, you can't get the buzz if it's for nothing.

So from a personal point of view but certainly not a profit making one, I think all registered shoots should be competition (prize fund) only but at a fixed payout dependent on the entries shown on a big board or screen so the whole business is transparent and entrants can see i) how their fee was distributed and ii) who were the winners. If it didn't work and people voted with their feet the the ground owners would soon force the CPSA  to rescind it.

Oh and one more thing, that £53 entry to the British and English Opens!!:no::no::no::no::no::no:

Try shooting Helice, £52 Comp entry fee for 15 birds :hmm: thats £20 in the prize pot per shooter. mind you looking at 2-300 quid for a win at a smallish comp and even 3rd will pay your entry, shells and a bit of petrol.

Any fast and loose women? :good:

Well, not around Worsley, that's for sure, but I've just got back from a business trip to Knutsford, just outside Corrie Country, and despite the wet weather there today, (doesn't it always rain 'oop North??), I've found the locals don't all live in caves anymore, you should see some of the luxury pads around that area, full of Wags no doubt..?? :hmm:

74/100 at Caterham today - reasonable pleased with that with a couple of tough stands (need to sort that out) and a few stupid lost birds (definitely need to sort this out) holding my score down -10, 5x9s, 7,5,4,3. Well at least i'm still improving and am still shooting competition rather than birds only !!!

77 won C glass - so getting there

Absolute poo. 55/80 at Cockburn.

Most stands were fine, just the silly one dropped here and there. The 1/8 and 3/8 ruined it. Still have no idea how to shoot some presentations. :hmm:

BM had an awesome 73/80.

Bagsy did really well an' all. Mung was awesome until he tried the big boys' Auto and stunk the place out, ruining his card.

"Big boys auto"? Is that some kind of euphemism?

Did a decent 38x50 at a local clay bale yesterday, but was pleased with myself on all stands apart from no. 1. the 5x10 there hobbled me a bit for the rest. Managed 9, 8, 9 & 7 x10 on the other four.

Loving the unmounted shooting too.

38x50 at Tiptree, really fluffed a couple of stands (incidentaly MC wiped the floor with everyone at the club and got high gun). Then did Terling and was doing my usual average then cocked up the last stand with a 3x8 to finish on 27x40. Shot both with MC and his mate Nigel, a good laugh and excellent day (cheers guys!). Nigel also did an excellent job of cutting off one of my rants mid flow, it would have been comedy gold if it had not been me :hmm:.
