Nial
I've realised that I need a pair of binoculars to track pigeon movements locally, this will hopefully help with flight lines and possibly getting new permissions. It will also hopefully help with finding the chuffing pigeons which seem to have disappeared of the face of the earth locally. I don't want to spend vast amounts of money, the cheaper the better but I realise there is probably a minimum level below which I'd be throwing my money away, e.g. are these.... Cheap Ebay Binoculars... ..going to be rubbish? Any advice on picking a pair? Thanks, Nial. Edited January 19, 2009 by Nial

OK, but how uch do you have to spend to get something that isn't dirt cheap rubbish? Looks like yours are £250 odd, I was hoping for £50 max. This is only for occaisional use, once or twice a month if I'm lucky so they don't have to be 'professional' quality and I don't want to be afraid to use them because of the cost. I've done a search here and someone recomended the ones Aldi were doing a while ago, Bresser 10x50's. Ie something like .... these ..I think. Any comments on these? Nial. I had seen these advertised in aldi/lidl and thought at that price they must be rubbish, now having looked through a pair i wish i'd bought them. seb
I have a pair of Steiner military binoculars and I think they are great, I managed to find some for £60 in an auction Mine are black but these are similar http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/army-binoculars-Stei...Q2em118Q2el1247 I like it that you set the focus on the eyepieces for your eyes and thats it then your eye does the rest. If you keep a look out I am sure you will find some for the right money.

I don`t remember how much they were at lidl when they came out but again they appear to be well worth the dosh.

nagantino
Nial, Binos are a great subject. I have had lots of them and love them. Scopes for rifles and binoculars are made in China for little money. They all work. Many of the best optical products use Chinese parts but dont tell you that. Those Binos look fine. The lightest and most attractive set I have now are......Opera glasses complete in a silver purse!
Flashman
Fisherman Mike recommended me the Swift Premier HHS Audubon, which I bought and are outstanding.
