Paul223
on enclosed land it is. Correct, but only by the land owner or his agent, which i believe means you if he's asking you to control the hares.

DaveK
NOT AGAIN and with the usual tosh from the armchair experts like it's not sporting or it's definately illegal. Can one of you mods put up some sort of sticky about this much overworked and misinformed subject please. It's illegal to lamp hares on unenclosed land, (heath, common, moorland, etc) as they are ground game. It is NOT illegal to lamp hares on enclosed land (farmland whether (or not) enclosed by hedges, fences or ditches is classed as enclosed). They can equally be classed as unwanted vermin. And what's sporting got to do with it? Some farmers want the hares off their land. No hares = no dogmen churning up the crops. I would class lamping as pure pest control. There's no sport involved in it at all whether for fox, hare or rabbit. Edited February 1, 2009 by DaveK
Baldrick
Well said, Dave. One hare causes crop damage equal or greater to four mature rabbits. We lost upwards of £10,000 of winter wheat to rabbits and hares on one enclosed 350-acre block in the '07 harvest. It's dogmen that are the real problem though, and I will gladly shoot the hares if it causes the didds to look elsewhere for their sport (and shiny farm kit). So, Bigbob, the answer is yes if it's your own land or you have been instructed to do the lamping by the landowner. A .22 is borderline on such a big animal, unless you head-shoot them. We mostly shoot them with shotguns, .22CFs or .243. Shooting them in summer over emerging sugar beet is the most productive time.
DaveK
Lorraine does them with her HMR out to 160 yards. Nice headshot hares, no meat damage, luvverly curry.
J@mes
sure BASC have the answers for these!
DaveK
I'm sure they do. They did when I asked them a few years ago and nothings changed. Don't forget that CA, SACS, NGO, NOBS, and many others that I've forgotten to mention will all give the same answer. BASC is good but isn't the only font of all knowledge. I've just had a know nowt who shares one of my permissions that its the rules that no faxes are shot after January so there'll be some for next years sprot. I don't shoot them for sport, it's pest control pure and simple. I often wondered why the land owner was loosing stock, but now I know, if charley is left unmolested in cub rearing season, they'll be eating everything, what a gloyt! The way I see it, if the farmer is good enough to give you permission, you owe it to him to do your best for him. Plus, when a fox dies, two come to its funeral
J@mes
true, but I haven't heard of the other ones you mention...maybe they need some more time in the spotlight so people get to know them!

People do know them J@mes, the Scottish Association for country sports, the COuntryside Alliance and the National gamekeepers association and the Naational organisation of beaters and pickers up, all been about for a while, NOBS being the newest, perhaps you should read and research more before expounding

J@mes
But like Mr K says, everyone refers to BASC.....hardly ever the others...so like I said, maybe the other ones need to raise their profile a bit more as it obviously isn't just me that doesn't know that much about them. I have been on this forum for over two years now, and rarely see the others mentioned.... but this is a bit O/T...
