Axe
Wife borrowed the Volvo last night and upon her returned mentioned the computer telling her their is a failure of the left dipped bulb. I conformed this in the morning and phoned earlier to book it in. Being Xenon, it has to be replaced by the dealer as there is a procedure to safely discharge the capacitors that hold 30,000 volts. I new this and was expecting to be charged for half hour workshop labour. What I didn't expect that was that the bulb would be £90 and that all told it would be about £150 for the job. I also didn't expect to be told that it was strange that the bulb had gone as they don't normally. When you consider the upgrade to Xenon was £600 in the first place, you can imagine i'm not a happy bunny.

MC
I'll bet ya a beer, they are not Gas Discharge HID Bulbs Agreed but I'll bet you 2 beers that there ain't £82 worth of extra brightness from yours. I also don't need a 'puter to tell me that one is blown or do I have to pay some oik in a boiler suit £60 to change one.
p@cman
From what I gather, the HID lamps are about three times brighter and last around ten times longer than halogen lamps. Edited February 20, 2009 by p@cman
al4x
well the second bit should rub it in a bit
Axe
last around ten times longer than halogen lamps. rub in it did! Seriously though, even with the added expense they are worth every penny. I'll never go back out of choice, the beam and spread is far superior to standard bulbs. radio1ham
well i guess you were well ripped off christ i know we in a recession but that is taking the **** i got exeon bulbs in my car and only cost 8 quid for the pair from me mates shop i think they were plain and simple just ripping folk off as for the capacitors in the lighting system i think that is a heap of poop aswell for a capacitor to hold 30,000 volts it would need to be the size of your car lying **** id go back and demand some sort of refund bloody ripp offs 90 quid for a 4quid bulb well id be given them a bad rep id slate the firm to the heavens and maybe in local paper aswell takes less than 5 mins to change a bulb how can they charge you for an hours labour maybe we all should set up garages we would be millionaires within a year and as for discharging capacitors i use resistors (or if im in a hurry i short them out depending on the voltage and capacitance ) the only high volume capacitor on a car is the battery (and you dont discharge that ) maybe there should be a show on the tv like the rogue builders program they occassionaly put on to name and shame the ripp off garage firms Edited February 21, 2009 by radio1ham
Axe
I don't wish to seem argumentitive but you are not right in what you say. The headlamps in my car are Xenon HID which should not be confused with standard fillament bulbs, regardless of what gas they are filled with. cappy0766
Hello Axe. I work for Volvo (for now, our dealership might not make it through the recession) and I was wondering how old your car was? Gas discharge bulbs are lot classed as a consumable/wearing part. They are covered for the duration of the car's guarantee. This includes labour. Dont let the ******* shaft you, Axe! Cappy
JohnGalway
Axe mate,Dis connect the battery next time and do it your self.Robbin gitt's First thing, I don't know anything concrete about any of this, but... As far as I'd understand it the bulb (or whichever part is attached to the bulb) will hold the charge, not the car battery. I took apart a trail camera one time, I think it was the flash that held the charge, all batteries out, and I got a nasty little ****** of a shock off it.
