22 subs

Recommended Posts

I tried some CCI stingers and found I had several fliers. I understand it's due to them initially being supersonic as they leave the barrel but as they transition to sub sonic they became unstable. Most people will intend to use them to acheive a greater shooting distance but the above reason makes this a bad choice IMO.

I'm no rocket scientist but there is a pressure wave in front of the bullet when supersonic. As the bullet slows that pressure wave will get closer to the point, equalise and eventually the point of the bullet overtakes any air deflection caused by its progress through atmosphere. At some part of this stage it's reasonable to assume the bullet can be de-stabilised and maybe even turned round.

The subsonic bullet has air disturbance behind it all the way so as far as I know will be the more reliable bullet at longer ranges. I rather suspect the supersonics are best used for more clout and deformation at moderate range where they are still supersonic. at the point of impact.

But then again I aint no Einstein either and am willing to listen to other theories. :hmm:

I'm with Dave-G. The supersonic rounds I have used are noisy, expensive and rarely as accurate as subsonics. I only shoot subsonics now, no doubt something like Eley target are more accurate, but for general use the subsonics are hard to beat. If I wanted something with a bit more power I would get a 17hmr or a centrfire.

Dave, I believe it's referred to as 'trans-sonic instability'. It's the reason why a lot of high-grade .22LR target ammunition is subsonic, to rule out this problem on the range.

I don't bother with stingers. They offer little discernible advantage, and make a real din. You need to cater for different zero points if you are chopping between subs and stingers.
