Shot gun and firearms tickets ,are they harder to get now ?

I have been actively involved in shooting sports for the past 50 years and have never had any problem with variations grants or any thing else envolving firearms . I know that i am well known to my local constabulary and have a good relationship with them .

Since belonging to P.W. i have read many threads where members have had problems with obtaining variations and grants for shot gun and firearms tickets for what seem very minor reasons . My very first shotgun certificate was bought at the local post office for 10 shillings and was available for just about any body . It seems to me that the whole system has tightend up and the licencing authoritys are more and more reluctant to issue a grant or a variation unless they really have to . Do you think this is true or not ?

yes but I'm not sure thats a bad thing.

You now need good reason to posses firearms, but if you have the need and are judged competent then most people don't seem to have a problem.

However if you're 10 and want a 50 caliber for shooting squirrels I believe you will have issues

It may be a more bureaucratic application process now, Harnser, but it's not a completely effective means of weeding out the lunatics. I have met some SGC and FAC holders that I would never want to shoot alongside, because of their attitude, and lack of judgement and skill. I appreciate that sounds arrogant and supercilious, but it's a comment based on a lot of experience and meetings with fellow Shots.

I've seen some right idiot who has been issued an FAC. He was in litts speaking to one of the salesmen and he did not have a clue about the caliber he was authorised to use. The salesman said would you like a silencer and the guy said nah, I want people to get their heads down!!

Haha, I wish I never meet that guy. I might be a beginner in clay pigeon shooting and a **** shot, but I try to read up on the sport and competent and I believe I am safe shot. AS my instructor would say it doesn't matter how many shots are accurate as long as they were all fired in a safe manner and I believe that is the right attitude. :shifty:

I'd disagree - not with the safety bit, but surely we have a responsibility to our quarry to shot as accurately as we can to minimise injury and ensure a clean kill???

With regard to the original question, I think things are getting beyond weeding out the nutters in some cases and the FEOs are looking to cover their ****es. They no longer seem to be keen on making decisions themselves but are happy to grant FAC's if there's a bit of paper from DSC or a mentor that takes the responsibility away from them. My FEO also told me he's keen to see mandatory testing as it would make his life easier!

I am talking CLAY PIGEON shooting here. I don't think the clay gives a damn which way you shoot it. :shifty:

Although I admit it does seem a rather flippant and deranged attitude, he probably just meant that he wanted people who might be in the area, even trespassers, to be aware that he was around and shooting. There must be a slight risk of a trespasser wandering into the line of fire of a silenced rifle. It's easy to say "tough, he shouldn't have been trespassing" but I don't think that would make me feel any better if I had pulled the trigger. :shifty:
