Billy.
Thank you all for your responses. I shall go down the 'rabbit/game pie' route and let them find out the nice way. Quite rightly, as stated, they should look at themselves before criticising others. As one of the girls was in fact trying to sell a new pair of leather boots that didn't fit her... I wonder if she thinks genuine leather grows on trees.... I've got a few photos of the weekend's shooting, so I will gladly show them a perfectly shot fox, with garyb holding it (garyb shot it and it was a mighty fine shot ) I'll keep you updated on the progress
RhiannonBW
Must be a Warrington thing Dead-Eyed, when I'm asked when I'm going on holiday I usually tell them I let them know when I find out the date of the seal clubbing season! On a slightly more serious note I do hope Flashman was joking, no matter what a person's misguided opinions are, that treatment is nauseating. Mr Potter Completely OT. My new sealskin coat drew nothing but admiration when I wore it to work. It's amazing what a little education can do. Dunkield
Rather than going down the confrontation route, why not, as others have said use it as an opportunity to educate people. I used to get asked why I wanted holiday in October/November time, when I explained what I was doing (I made no secret of it) I got the usual 'why do you do that' All I did was explain the situation regarding deer numbers etc and forwarded a few web links, now those who asked understand why numbers need to be controlled - they may never support it, but at least they understand it. Billy.
Haha, ok so I was sat at my desk earlier and I got an internal call... "I've heard you kill animals" the girl said down the phone. "Yes, I do. What's the problem?" I said "That's cruel and sick. If you weren't new, I'd be a lot less polite." She said. "I'm only doing it as the farmer wants the animals shot and I want free food." I said. "What do you shoot?" She asked. "Foxes, rabbits, squirrels, pigeons, pheasants, partridge, duck...." I responded. "You're cruel. The foxes will eat the rabbits, so why on earth would they need killing!!?" She said, with a raised voice. "Actually, the foxes will find a much easier and slower meal by just getting into the farmer's chicken pen and killing all of those instead." I smugly responded. *Silence* "Well..... You're just cruel." The girl said. Then she put the phone down. I shall be taking some lovely rabbit and pigeon pie in next week and we'll see how they feel then. Mate, I appreciate that you are trying to win them over - and that's great. Continue to try and win them over - as has been said it is a great opportunity to introduce urbanised neo-idiots to the real world and educate the masses to realise that meat is not fashioned in the same way as plastic, but that blood is spilled for the benefit of the meaty satisfaction. HOWEVER, what you have been describing is getting dangerously close (if not already there) to what is called discrimination/workplace bullying. I mean, really, making internal phonecalls to berate a colleague?! Whether or not it is an issue for you now, it may well be later. I advise you log every occasion/confrontation. Names, Times, Dates, Method of communication (email/phone/verbal) - and what specifically was said. Especially anything that is (or can be construed as...) intimidation/bullying/offensive. EVEN if it doesn't offend you, but it COULD intimidate/scare/offend SOMEONE. If ever it becomes a problem then you have a detailed log that you can refer back to. You may later want this if things get hairy. Also, do not 'repay the favour' as such. Just remain polite, try and educate the cretins, and log any unpleasantries. This may seem like an over-reaction, or silly pessimism - but I am a realist. And when it comes to promotions, fair pay, workplace professionalism and at the end of the day your livelihood - I don't take risks, I take precautions Edited March 30, 2009 by Boomstick

Billy.
Christ where are you working, PETA? Feels like it...! Boomstick: Thanks for the tip. However, the company is tiny and if half the stuff got written down that the female employees had to listen to from the male bosses, they'd be onto a better case than I would...!! I'll just happily get on with what I do and I'll leave them in their pink, fluffy, happy, 'everything has a right to live' lives. I'll only stand my ground if I'm confronted on the matter, as above. Cranfield
Why not just ignore them and don't discuss the subject ? I have encountered people over the years who don't like my pastimes, my face, my car, my choice of ties, or whatever. None of these things have had any effect on my health, prosperity, enjoyment of life, nor made me change any of the things they didn't like. RhiannonBW
I can't believe someone phoned you to have a go at you?? That is bullying and I'd start keeping notes of when and where. That's good advice, and just because the girls are too stupid/unconfident to do anything about comments from men folk, doesn't mean you have to put up with it. There was a new law introduced a couple of years ago, mostly about religious discrimination at work, but it also covers 'beliefs' rather than just religions, so atheists don't have to put up with being preached to by fundie christians, and vegetarians should be allowed their own shelf in the communal fridges. HOWEVER it also works the other way - you shouldn't have to put up with taunts or mickey taking because you choose not to be an ignorant anti and can give a reasonable response when questioned. (Or as I saw someone call them the other day an ignoranti!) Rhiannon

Rhiannon and it doesnt matter what the other guys in the place say to the women, just dont join in with them - the **** that your taking is more than enough justification for a workplace harassment lawsuit and possibly a very big payout... but seriousley, keep a record of it, because when (not if, when) you eventually get so sick of it you turn around and tell them all to do one or something similar youll need something to back you up

gubby_uk
I had a chap start on about how cruel it was that I shoot for the table. I suggested he look on You tube for some videos of animal slaughtering around the world, including the UK. Now tell me which is better. A single, quick shot and out, or the bloody awful mess he saw in the videos. Funny how he changed his tune. I always say, if you can't kill it, don't eat it. danccooke
I have one particular girl that detests the fact that I shoot for the table. I brought up the argument of it being better to eat something that has lived a wild and free life, then shot and on the table the same day. Rather than being kept in the dark wading through it's own excrement force fed to the point that it can't support it's own weight and then mass slaughtered with more going to waste than sold. "but they are bred to die" was the response......... There is no educating some people. The rest of the office always ask what and when I am shooting how it went. etc etc they especially loved my rabbit gutting video I posted on facebook. One even said she showed her kids where meat came from and apparently they were enthralled. Some will get it, some won't those who you know will argue black is white just because. I leave to it (unless i am in an argumentative mood) the others that are receptive to education, I educate as best I can. Admittedly with that girl it has become more banter now. When she knows I am shooting she sends me text messages saying sicko or something like that, and I send her picture messages of Crowned Pigeon of Paunched Rabbits. All with smilie faces from both ways. So maybe I am breaking through.
njc110381
Take it as a fun challenge. I find most people will come to terms with hunting when they learn more about how farmed animals are treated. I knew my other half for some time before we got together. She looked like she was about to die the first time I told her I shoot (she's a veggie). Now we live together and I still shoot twice a week, leave bunies in the sink, pheasants hanging in the tree by the back door etc and all is fine. At first it does look nasty to shoot things. I don't like the pointless killing of animals myself. What you need to do is put forward the reasons for what you do. Several people I know took ages to work out why I look so upset when I see a dead Deer by the roadside when I will happily shoot one. It's not being dead that's the problem, it's the fact that it could have suffered and is now going to waste. It really bothers me
Browning GTS
Im lucky i have never come across anyone at work who is anti, a few are actualy interested when i speak to them about shooting, some even have the odd rabbit, pigeon or pheasant off of me. JohnGalway
Take it as a fun challenge. I find most people will come to terms with hunting when they learn more about how farmed animals are treated. As a farmer I'm concerned about people directing anti's or potential antis towards farming in such a way. I don't think it's good strategy passing a problem onto others, farming as a whole is under enough scrutiny as is. I would rather put forward how crops and livestock are damaged in the case of foxes & rabbits, and illustrate the efforts that some shoots go to to increase the biodiversity of an area, yes some birds will be shot but none will be wasted and all are well fed and cared for. Farmers and hunters need each other in the vast majority of cases. P.S. The above is concerning the statement only as I'm hearing it more and more often and should not be taken as comment on Njc
dpile1
Great replies chaps. I'm doing my bit to make sure that my little girls don't grow up and become ignorant antis like the ones described on here. I regularly bring home rabbits, ducks, pheasants and even some geese for us all to eat. My children are fascinated with the process of getting the animal ready for the table and I do my best to encourage it. At least they'll know and appreciate where their food comes from. Some kids that I know don't even realise that Pork comes from a Pig.
plinker
i have got no problems with vegaterians ,they have strong beliefs and stick to them fair play. what boils my **** is the uneducated majority who eat factory reared **** meat and think hunting/shooting etc is so cruel and barbaric, that is just stupid. i have spoken to some veggies about wild animals having a good free life and a sudden death and have found most (not all) of them to be sympathetic to this and find we have a lot of common ground.(except i dont wear rainbow jumpers and have beads in my hair )
danccooke
Wife was a veggie when I met her. Now she will shoot, kill, prepare (badly) and eat, almost any meat i put in front of her (easy there lads)
