Is anyone else effected by Rape, its just starting to come on bloom in Suffolk/North Essex, a brief encounter at weekend, despite most of the field being less than the bright yellow to come, lead to running nose, sore throat and itching eyes, yet nothing else really effects me.

Any solutions other than staying a mile down wind of the rape zones

Ours started flowering several weeks ago, and it's just started to give off the usual smell of cat ****.

On a more general point, pigeon damage to OSR throughout East Anglia looks worse this year than last. Several local farmers have ripped up (what's left of) their winter OSR, and are re-drilling.

Yes, Harnser, so you might think, but I meet a surprising amount of farmers who refuse to allow any form of pigeon shooting. These farmers, all of old-school methods, believe that decoying i) doesn't do enough damage to pigeon populations and ii) continues to bring increased numbers of birds in long after the Shot has packed up and gone home. So the farmers just rely on gas bangers and other scare tactics, oblivious to more proactive and undeniably effective methods.

I have one right behind my house.I can stand in the garden and listen to the gas gun go off all day on various parts of the farm.Last year one field got hammered by pigeons, hundreds of them all day flighting from wood to field.I seen him in the next field and went and asked him while he could actually see the pigeons and he still said NO.He said he doesnt like people with guns on the land, but he would like to get rid of the pigeons  I told him if you chase them off they will come back but i have yet to see a dead one come back and he laughed and said he would think about it.He has my number and knows where i live but i wont hold my breath even though he has the gas guns out again this year.

Yep, me, the wife and one of the boys all get mild "head cold" symptoms that coincide with the rape starting to flower each year. We take antihistamines and suffer it for a few weeks basically.

It's depressing, isn't it? With OSR prices being as low as they are currently, you'd think any commercially-minded farmer would be happy to allow shooting, in preference to pulling up all the destroyed OSR and re-drilling.

Gas guns don't do a damned thing, apart from upset all our urbanite neighbours.
