shed loads of Kites and Buzzards round here - nice to see but a pain when you're out shooting.

I was walking down an alleyway in St Albans the other day, and a pigeon was sat in a bush 30 yards in front of me - swoosh, all of a sudden a buzzard swooped down and ripped it's throat out knocking it to the floor - i walked past and it then came back to eat the remains.

There are a pair of what i assume are breeding Buzzards in one of the woods on our land, we can often see them circlueling from the knitchen table and its lovely to watch however, they do often seem to be being bomb dived and mobbed by the crows quite often :D also a couple of weeks ago i was out decoying using dead birds for decoys when a hawk flew in and stated trying to eat one of the birds  i had to get up to scare it of and the same thing happened we i set out next to the woods but, that time it took a bird with it

This is very interesting cos I've seen loads of red kites in the Burnham Bucks area but never seen any where I am, until yesterday or did I?

I was with the Peltman when I saw it, even had the bino's on it & I was convinced it was red kite, but the Peltman was sure it was buzzard

I have to say it looked identical to the birds in Al4x's pics

Despite them not sraying from where they were released, they have been spreading, just very slowly.

The field I was shooting a couple of weeks ago was 50 miles west of here.

The tell tail signs aren't always obvious when the birds are side on, they are more noticable from underneath or when they are turning.

Lovely to see. We have had buzzards move to the area over the past few years. Often see 4/5 flying out the back if my house. Probably find they are parents with young from last year hunting- you'll find they don't fly too low unless they are hunting or fighting for area. I would say-if they are buzzards they are a family- unless you see them diving for one another.

I was watching 2 pairs the other day over a large wood high up swooping for each other - fasinating sight but wouldn't like to be on the other end of those talons

Don't get kites in my area at the mo - sometimes see harriers, peregrines, long eared & short eared owls. Aswell as the common BoP- kestrels, sparrowhawks, barn, tawny & little owls.

SS,

Kites are now commonplace on my patch, so the chances are you were correct.

They're not as shy as Buzzards, I had one floating above me only 30 feet up when I was picking up amongst the deeks back during the Autumn drillings.

They're lovely birds, great to see so many around.

Cat.

most likely buzzards, theres loads round here. on a warm (ok, relatively warm) day I usually see 3/4 at a time

probably, as bad as this sounds if im not allowed to shoot it i dont really care if its a red crested tater or a phone book!

it is nice to see them though, along with that second of "i wonder what it is?" before i shrug and walk on :P
