Americans?

I've only been to America twice, once to Las Vegas and once to New York, and found the people i met to be some of the most polite and courteous i've ever encountered. I didn't even see any of the legendary New Yorker attitude even when i was mortal drunk dancing on a petrol forecourt blocking cars at 4am :hmm: . However with the exception of two, every American i've met in THIS country have lived up to the stereotype of being a bragging, know-it all, louder that a space shuttle launch gobsh!t£! Go figure!

I lived in the States for a year. The best things I got asked (these are genuine):

1. "Do they have TV in Scotland?"

2. "Had you heard of Mickey Mouse before coming to the States?"

3. "What language do you speak in England? Cos, you're speaking in English with me now cos we're in America and we speak English, but what language do you speak at home?"

Admittedly, the last one was from a high-school drop-out, but still...

Honestly though, had a bl88dy great year, one of the best of my life. Just like any other country in the world America has cool people and stupid people.

Lee what are winkey bars ?

Also is it true that southerners all have multipul firearms drive pickups and when out shooting just wildly blast away at anything and everything ?

Do southerners really eat biscuts & Gravey all that offen ?

Do shoot outs with the POLICE and SWAT in the streets really ever happen or is this 100% film culture over exaduration or is there some small truth in it ?

I am not going to tell anyone about what I don't like about Americans, I am going to tell you what I like.

Everyone in the USA Loves their country, from the oldest families in the states to the newest citizens, everybody is proud of their country and rightly so, most but not all new immigrants tend to integrate and become Americans.

as to the majority of immigrants in this country who make no effort whatsoever to integrate and do not show any affection or loyalty to this country, I will not go on and risk being called a xenophobe, but I will just relate a little story.

In February this year myself and my wife went on our annual trip to Florida, I have friends there, we were met by everyone with a welcome and courtesy, we went to my wife's favorite place Sea World, arriving at 9.00am just in time at the entrance to watch the flag ceremony where they played the anthem, everyone to a man stopped and was respectfully, it was fantastic, later in the shamu stadium prior to the show there was a short film praising all the serving armed forces in the trouble zones, also the speaker invited everyone serving past and retired members of the USA British and allied forces to stand, whereupon the whole audience clapped and cheered loudly.

I like that and we could do with a bit of that over here.

Lee what are winkey bars ?

Is it Twinky Bars as in Hostess Twinky? Made famous by the ads in Marvel comics as well as Slim Jims. I tried a Hershey bar recently and thought it was pretty bad, tasted of chemicals. Our chocolate probably is fairly sick making to non Brits too.

I might get into trouble for saying this, but what they heck...

I used to have a mindset that, with the exception of a few people I had met and got on with, America was populated entirely by ignorant *******. I cam to this conclusion because pretty much every single American I met fell into that category. The ones on the list of exceptions were limited to my Dad's mate Bruce and another one of my dad's friend's from Texas called Bob. Both are good people.

However, I've traveled a bit since taking that view and I'm now changing my mind. A lot of the people I have met on business and on holiday have been both very friendly and quite genuine, but with a few notable exceptions (The people that work at airport Immigration and Customs tend to fall into the "*****" category).

I still get a little twitchy when I meet the sort that thinks they are the world's police, or that they are superior to every other nation on earth (yet don't have a passport and have never traveled), but these people are few and far between. Maybe it is just the places I visit (work is in Florida, spent a while in the Hawaiian chain)...

I guess you guys aren't so bad. If you're lucky, we'll let you join the commonwealth again someday.

The chicks learn the art of making love by watching porn. Please god tell me this is true.

Met plenty of Yanks on my travels and never found one I didn't like. The most friendly, generous people i've met(apart from Northerners)

Funniest was a guy in the US Navy I met when out in Thailand. Got chatting and he asked if me and my mates liked a drink. I replied were English what do you think. Found him a taxi 5 hours later coz he couldn't walk. He ended up spending his leave with us getting trolleyed.

This is really interesting and fun.

I'm glad to hear that most of you have have good experiences here. We are very proud of our country and our heritage and at the same time a lot of us recognize and take pride in our immigrant past. In fact I'm working on tracking down more info about John Mooney from County Roscommon that took a boat ride across the pond in the 1870's. I also recently found out that my mother's family, the Rea's used to be MacRae's way back.

I do admit that a lot of my countryman do think we are the strongest and the best at everything and we do have a pretty good track record but as a nation we are still young compared to the rest of the world.

As far as the rednecks and swat teams go. Just remember that stereotypes become that because there is some truth in them, but don't believe everything you see on the telly.

We as Americans do need to become more globally aware though. There are many who couldn't tell you where in our country their state is, let alone where things are in the UK.

Someone also mentioned Northern Ireland. I'm ashamed to admit that I know very little about the situation and was actually thinking of asking on here if someone could explain it (you'd have to talk slowly though, I am a Yank after all) but I wasn't sure if it would be appropriate. People tend to get upset when politics are involved in discussions.

I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for your military. I know much is made of the US contributions to WWI and WWII but in both wars your boys were fighting for years before we got into it, that fact isn't lost on me.

Take care,

Jim

Interesting thread... :hmm:

My partner had never been to the States, and his only exposure to Yanks was TV shows and tourists in the cities. He thought that all yanks were ignorant, aggressive, loud, uncouth, etc. etc.

My sister lives in North Carolina at the bottom of the Blue Ridge mountain range - we took our last holiday there a few years ago, and decided to fly into Washington Dulles and take several days to drive there, visiting various places along the way. Everywhere we went we were met with courtesy, smiles, and pleasant words. People went out of their way to help us and we had a lot of interesting discussions about differences in our cultures and laws. My partner came to the conclusion that all the nice people in America stayed at home, and it was just the loudmouthed idiots that travelled!

I'm not sure I agree with him entirely, but it's certainly true that you don't see a complete picture of Americans just from TV and tourists; and it's the same everywhere else. I'm currently working in Ivory Coast, West Africa, and again have found that the people here are extremely friendly, happy to share their culture and welcome you into it, extremely hard working and family-oriented.

I think if you want to learn more about a people, you have to visit their country and see how they live...

You'll find that there is no single category that you can fit them into - there will be all kinds of extremes, and everything in between, and this will apply whatever country or people you visit...

BUT, just 'cuz you are a 'red neck' doesnt make you bad people.. I have met several from the UK and good lads everyone :hmm: And none of use are married to our sisters

I didn't mean to imply that it did Lee. Believe me, my neck ain't pure white:

This is a couple years old but I'm the one on the right, that's my truck with the Buckmaster's plate on it. You can't see both side of the truck so you miss the other half of the dual CB antennas. I worked at a radio shop so my rig was peaked and tuned and complete with echo mic.

We took that pic because my mate Steve (the one on the left) wanted to impress a girl. Why he though a picture of us and our trucks would do that, I'll never know....

Like Jeff Foxworthy says: "You can't make fun of a redneck unless you are one, and I are one...."

As I've aged I've gotten a little more polish on me but it's thin in places.....

I want to add to that living here I feel that people in the southern half of the country are the friendliest, followed by the upper midwest. The area I live in, the northeastern portion near the coast is full of *********, don't get me wrong there are nice people here but we have our fair share of the former too. For the most part, the further you get from major cities the friendlier people get.

Dumb questions I have been asked,

1 Are you Australian?

2 How do you guys get on with your money all being different sizes and colours?

3 how come you guys aren't gettin involved in the war with Eyerack

4 Where's England, Across the Pacific?

What don't I like, the fact that the Shermans hold World championships for stupid obscure stuff in Buttfakk Idaho and then declae themselves world champions.

Friendly fire, one of their better inventions

Apart from that, I'd much prefer to have the colonials as friends and allies than a whole mess of other folk, some closer to home.

PS Lee, I love ya dude

Strange that... From what I see being drunk in pubs we get most of our beer from Australia. Maybe the UK does what the Columbians do with their coffee and export the best stuff.

I think the point about people getting more friendly the further away from a city you are is true just about anywhere you go. I used to live in London and no one has time for you (apart from the beggers and traffic wardens). Everyone is distant. Time is money. Everyone is competing. I moved back to Suffolk and people just seemed generally more relaxed, more friendly and happier.

Hopefully I'll be able to get more data for my research this year when Mrs. Wookie and I head out for the holidays. I think we're planning on getting to a couple of cities as well as the wilderness during our time out there.
