Cranfield
I had a pair of these made many, many years ago and they are excellent. http://www.noisebreaker.co.uk/
maddog546
Funny enough whilst out canvassing for work in Truro yesterday I called into a hearing aid shop that was advertising hearing aids at knock down prices! You could of battered me to the floor with a feather when he showed me the price of fitted plugs -£595 ,now thats just taking the p*** as I'm already 30% down in one ear but they were working well enough to hear him.I'll stick to my North Sonic II ear plugs. I'm going death not dafted

MC
You could get a moulded set of green leopard ones for £45, you can wear them all day without noticing them. Sonics get uncomfortable after a while, especially if it is hot.
Dunkield
I would be very careful buying Sonics. I have had a pair for about 20 years and have always sung their praises, I bought another pair recently as backups and they have changed the material they are made from. They are now only what I can call hard plastic, whereas before they were more like soft rubber. The new ones are almost unusable they are so hard. JamesLeic
buy the military amplivox (green over ear jobs) from an army surplus shop should be cheap enough and they work well beleive me Edited July 7, 2009 by JamesLeic
MC
Not really ear plugs though are they? Sonics are no longer called sonics either just to completely confuse you.

GW80
I got a pair of sonics from John Norris over the net about a year or so ago that were still rubber, good value for money think they were abou £12.00.
JamesLeic
Not really ear plugs though are they? Sonics are no longer called sonics either just to completely confuse you. True but they do the job and unlike ear plugs they dont fall out or get lost as easily so they do have some advantages
Dunkield
Alrighty, that's Sonics out due to the hard plastic... If the softer ones are still out there John I wouldn't dismiss them John. If I could get another pair I would, but that would be hard to tell buying online when you can't squeeze them.

MC
If they are the flesh coloured ones then you should be OK, the new ones are clear.
Windy
i've got some Surefire moulded plugs, think they are called sonics?? Do a good job initially, but found after a hundred or so carts that I still got some ringing in my ears. Apparently the harmful sound can get in through the bones around your ear. I switched to muffs and it doesn't happen. Have just bought some of the affordable Deben active muffs (£49). They are brilliant. Will probably be selling by nearly new Deben passive muffs. JonnyR
green leopards with valves so you can still hear. I think they are about 80 quid so not cheap but so comfortable and should last for years. What price for your hearing?

JamesLeic
how much did you pay cranfield? can you remember? it says 2009 prices are £75 per pair in their broshure if you follow the links also says they are expected to last approx 7 years
Dunkield
If they are the flesh coloured ones then you should be OK, the new ones are clear. Maybe so, but both pairs I have are flesh coloured. In fact if I took a picture of them both it would almost impossible to tell them apart, but they couldn't feel more different. The newere ones have a very definite moulding join along both sides, which only makes them even more uncomfortable. I am absolutely gutted that I lost one of my 'soft' ones pigeon shooting - they don't exactly stand out on the floor of a wood either. The carrying box the originals came in is blue, the box for the newer ones is clear plastic, like this. Maybe the clear ones are more comfortable, they may even be made from silicon? MC
I have had a pair for about 20 years and they came in a box like that. This is all getting very confusing, I have two pairs of green leopards one with filters and one without and I don't notice much between them, The filters are not worth the extra money. MPT1
Try any builders merchant or a health & safety outlet Enfield Safety Supplies is one I use. Disposable plugs work out about 3p each. All these products sold to the building industry are checked out by the Health & safety Executive.
WGD
how much did you pay cranfield? can you remember? I paid £70 last year, very good product for the money IMO and very comfortable, moulded to your ear and made of soft rubber.
Dunkield
Whatever you get make sure you use them, sounds obvious but I did a 4 man flurry that ended up being about an 8 man flurry (to use up the remaining clays) at the beaters barbie a couple of weeks ago, we shot at least 500-600 clays in rapid succession, the noise would have been deafening. I would say out of the 8 guns, about half wore hearing protection- utter madness.

Dunkield
Right, after this I could go on Mastermind with specialist subject Sonic II Earplugs 1989-2009 Early box that contains comfy earplugs, must be 20 years old, maybe more [bought from Egham Guns, only Cat is likely to remember that shop, that far back] The comfy soft rubber earplug on the left, the hard and uncomfortable 'new' or 'intermediate' production earplugs on the right. You can see just about see the join on the newer ones. The fact the difference in appearance is very subtle, but they are like sticking a 1/2" self tapping screw into your ear I really liked these plugs, so if anyone knows if the clear ones are soft let us know as I will buy some, but as John says you can't judge that buying online.
