Cabinet Problem! *urgent*

Morning All..

Major panic, I was looking at ordering my Hatsan Escort in a few mins but have suddenly realised that I'm one gun over on the cabinet capacity. I was sure it held eight guns but a quick call to the Firearms licensing dept says a capacity of Seven.

There are two guns in the cabinet that can be freely 'rid of' as such, obviously the sensible thing to do is take a gun out and drop it off at the local police station (its an old Webley&Scott single barrel bolt action 410 that belonged to my grandfather, its barrel is severely pitted)

I'm rather annoyed that over gone over the limit and am worried about any fines/rules that I've broken... Am I in big trouble here?

The last shotgun I bought was back in december 08 and I'm suprised to have not been contacted by the Firearms dept with a rolocking for having too many guns.

Any replies greatly appreciated!!!

John

P.S I was getting rid of the 410 anyway to make space for the Hatsan,

Cheers for all the replies, I'm very glad to hear it should be ok.

The hatstand hasn't been ordered yet :good:

You may take the mickey.... but its my first 'true' lefthand gun that I hope to be able to hit pigeon and crow with, will only be used for field use! might try out on the clays but it won't be in any competition.

I already own an O&U 12gauge + 20guage SBS but need to have them cast!

I thought that there was not a capacity to them, but the onus was on the license holder to ensure that their firearms were secured in a suitable manner. Certainly that is what it said on a yellow sticker on my SGC...

Mind you, the sticker was not there on my FAC and the FEO checked my cabinet, so I guess if you have FAC firearms as well, it's different. That said, all mine are in a cabinet that is suitable for them.

Mate, that's a serious problem you have there and if I were you I would be concerned.

I can't believe you have been foolish enough to purchase a Hatsan Escort.

Well spotted...John if you buy this gun I must tell you wont be invited to any of my coffee mornings.

If you want a true left hand buy a Benelli, Left hand available in all their auto's.

Cheers for all the replies, I'm very glad to hear it should be ok.

With an auto you use the shims to push the stock over left or right....A true left hand auto only offers you the fact spent cases will not pass across your face as the ejection port is on the left................

You've got to love Pigeon watch :good:

The Hatsan Escort being described as a marmite gun is very true :good:

Unfortunately at present I'm not willing to spend fair money on a Benelli or Beretta! I must admit though, I'm sorely disapointed with the coffee mornings.. I heard you are the best host on this very site

I don't have any problem shooting a right handed shotgun with regarding to opening the gun, firing etc but due to the cast my aim is badly off or I'm having to move my head an enormous amount when trying to aim onto the bead.

I went for the left handed Hatsan as I didn't want cartridges being ejected across my face and potentialy spitting hot bits of muck back at my unprotected eyes,

The guns going to be used several times a week on rough walks over our farmland, as long as it goes bang and I can hit things with it then it should be fine .. fingers crossed I get a decent one of the bunch **touches wood*

I was told my license would be limited to the capacity of the cabinet

I said what its Official Capacity and was told yes

I am sure my 3 gun cabinet could hold 6 or more but of course the guns are likely to be damaged

my FEO put my cabinet down as a 8gun but officially its a 6gun although 8 will fit :good:

The law does not require that you keep guns in a cabinet at all. As your license says, you are simply required to take adequate precautions for their security. There is no limit to the number of guns you can have on a SGC, as long as your security is adaquate for the numbers involved.

A BS standard cabinet properly fitted and positioned is the FEO preference, and the more guns in the heavier, and therefore harder to move it is, so if they will fit in an approved cabinet you have complied with the law. Most 5 gun designed cabs will take 7 guns by top and tailing. My cabs with 14 slots will take 20 OK. Most forces are fine for up to 12 guns in cabs without further security, but if you run over that they will be looking at further perimeter security, ie alarms etc

This is quite a timely thread. I am moving house in a couple of weeks and rang norfolk police up to get some idea of the process. they send me a form to fill in which includes size of cabinet and if it is police approved. I asked why they needed to know size as it, as above depends how many you can get in and its my responsibility to secure. He said there was a box on their system so it had to be filled! As for is my cabinet police approved, officially I have no idea as I bought it secondhand, but it is a good one. I wondered if I could say it was though because the police approved it last time they came round. Just seems that they gather as much information on you as they can rather than what they need. Half tempted to leave the box blank, but deep down I know I will just end up causing grief for myself.

when i moved house i asked my local bobby if i could leave my gun with them at the local station,it,s also a t.a.g station untill i get my cabinet set up,no problem the bobby,s a family friend.in the mean time the f.o.e has been put in civil hands,so i arrange to get my gun back but they will not now return it untill i have a visit from them.the young lady comes out to check it out and refuses to pass the cabinet as secure.the cabinet i have used for 20 plus years.

asked why not and was told it was not police approved.granted it was one i had made and it met the requirments as far as i was aware, but it did not have the kite mark and numbers.had to buy a an "approved cabinet" before they would return my gun.

Did you not contact BASC? I hate the fact they seem to make it up as they go along. Total bollards!

As you can tell I am a little hacked off at them at the moment.

Dan ,

If norfolk constabulary has inspected the cabinet before .then write on the form , as preveously inspected by Norfolk constabulary .

Thanks will do. For size of cabinet should I put what would fit or what i think it is officially? I think it is a four gun but I think I could get six in it.
