Breastman
It will depend on your FLO's attitude towards stalking. Some Police forces ask for DSC1 as a matter of course, some aren't bothered. Yet again with others it will depend on whether you want to just go straight into stalking or whether you will be using the .243 for target shooting mainly with the occasional stalk. Give your firearms dept a ring, they should tell you straight away if they're going to insist on it. Sauer
it is a good idea to do this course even as a novice. it will give you good insight into safety for one thing and youll enjoy it. that said..... it angers me that forces are no insisting on this before they will grant an fac.. it is NOT A LEGAL REQUIREMNET!!! if thats going to hold back your fac .... contact your shooting organistion your affialted to be it BASC OR NGO or whatever.. ( everyone should have basic cover these days in my opinon) and tell them and they shouyld contact your local firearms dept.. on your behalf... its bout time all these forces started working to the guidleines they have and not what THEY feel should be the case. sauer

I dont think a total novice should be aloud out with a large rifle, but what boils my **** is a lad who has been shooting .22 rimmie for a few years and been out with cf users is not allowed to own a centre fire rifle because he has no experience, how did the shooters of years gone by get there guns then. Harnser
In my opinion it is out of order for the police to insist on a dsci certificate before issuing a centre fire ticket for stalking . I can to a certain extent understand why they want a new stalker to be mentored for a certain period of time . Neither of these restrictions are required in law to obtain a centre fire ticket for stalking . Any body who had the time and the money to oppose these restrictions in the crown court, i am sure would win the day . Any how why no restrictions on shooting foxes with a centre fire rifle or will that be next . Is there any difference in shooting foxes with a rifle as apposed to shooting deer . Harnser . mikee
Harnser as you know i have this very problem at the moment, been told ok to have the fac for fox but may need either dsc1 or mentor for deer, cant get my head around it but dont want to rock the boat, will just wait and see the wording when it arrives mikee
flytie
When I applied for my FAC I was told by our FEO that if I did the DSC1 then I would not have a mentoring condition on my license. I thought it was money well spent and thoroughly enjoyed the course. So ask your FEO what your options are. Atb, ft
steve_b_wales
The probelm is that some people are 'afraid' to challenge the police regarding FAc issues. I have a problem with my S.W.Police regarding my .243. I contacted BASC, and, only with their help, I had the condition removed from my licence.
