I got it sussed this morning......

Zero 50yds, 80 = 1 milldot drop, 100 = 2 milldot drop, 120 = 3 milldot drop

It seems that the bullet begins to drop at 60 yds and carries on dropping at about 1 milldot every 20 yds or so

It will all be down to accurate range estimation now so I have been pacing out markers such as trees etc on my favourite permission.

drop inches

1 mildot = 1.8" @ 50yards. 0 / 1.8" = cross hair (zeroed @)

1 mildot = 3.6" @100yards. -7.76 / 3.6" = -2.15 mildots

1 mildot = 7.2" @200yards.-56.51 / 7.2"= -7.85 mildots

This was using info for eley 40gr subs. I am sure you could extend this using a spreadsheet.

Don't take my word for it do the calculations.

Doesn't it depend on what magnification you're using (on a variable mag scope) as to what 1 mildot represents ?

Andy

Just had a thought, they perhaps don't do a mil dot reticle on a variable power scope

Loads of MilDot on variable mag, they "tend" to be accurate at 10x!!

As it happens I am having a bit of a problem with my Mil Dot Scope. Apprently there are 2 sorts those that self adjust the Mil Dot with magnification and those that are set at a particular magnification (1st plane & 2nd plane don't know which is which).

I have just purchased a Nikko Sterling 4-12x50AO scope and its the sort of scope thats fixed at a prticular mag to give the correct Mil Dot usage. However I cannot find anywhere which mag that is?? I have asked the JSR from where I purchased it and they don't know, I have e-mailed Nikko at their admin (4 times), with no reply. I am now about to try the importer to see if I can get anywhere there.

so with a variable scope (that adjustsfor mil dot) the ctc Mildot will be 3.6" @ 100yds at any mag but with a "fixed Mil Dot" (can still be variable mag) scope it's "probablly" x10 but not always

Hi, Yep, your final sentence is a fair assessment. Each to his own (sad world if it wasn't so) but I think 10mag is too much for rabbit shooting with LR and subs and rabbits tend to move. It doesn't take too long to learn the size of a rabbit (or whatever) , be a reasonable judge of range and get to picture the hold over. Once done you can stop fiddling and just shoot the thing before it's legged it.

Cheers
