vole
Side on 30 or so yards 36gr of BB absolutely no problem. Humane as you like. Not exactly a large animal .With the correct load a shotgun does a great job.

henry d
Use the escort with 1/2 - 3/4 choke and either ordinary 50/52 gm 3" magnum No1 shot or if you can find them Win XXX magnum in No2`s, they are buffered and great for fox, good pattern and copper plated too. Range is up to your ability, pattern the load first before attempting it on Mr.Todd !
njc110381
inside 40 yards with full choke and BBs will do the job. Make sure you're hitting where you're aiming on some targets first though, you need to know enough pellets are hitting the target area. I recon a 6" square air gun target should do, just stand back and blast it to see how many strikes you get.

swift4me
Last year two friends and I were hunting coyotes in Alberta and two of us had the Swifts and one had a Benelli shooting 3" #4 tungsten, (Hevi-Shot), loads. The shotgun killed more than 5 or 6 cleanly inside 40 yards, and I mean CLEANLY. No more than four or five steps if that much. But the reason I'm posting this, is on one coyote, my friend hit it nicely at around 40 yards with the Swift, using 55 gr. Hornady V-Max, and the coyote was definitely mortally engaged, but the bullet had hit the shoulder, so it was not over as the dog was running off as best it could. My friend with the Benelli stood up to finish things of, and tok the coyote off its feet at 55 yds, then again at 65, and even a third time at 80+ yds. No B.S., as we were all so amazed at the kinetics of what we all use as a duck load, that we paced off the shots. Even after that, I finished the deal with my Swift. It all happened very quickly and we killed it as well as was possible. Obviously we had a tough coyote and some non-lethal impacts, but I post this only to attest to the amazing kinetics of a god pattern of dense shot on any canine. I've only shot two fooxes with a shotgun, but when calling coyotes, bobcats or foxes inside 40 yds, I'd have no qualms with a well patterning 3" load. Here in France, the normal load for shooting fox on a drivenm shoot is 36 gr. #1, which is the largest legal shot size. Another thing, if you are a caller, the shotgun really forces you to be on your game versus having the option of taking them at 70 or 120 yds with a bullet. Just thought I'd throw in. drut
Have shot fox to 35yds with 36gm 1's no problem, have also shot 2 with 32gm 5's when out shooting rabbits but both were under 20 yds.Surprising how close they will pop out of cover at times, other times getting within 200yds is no mean feat. Vectra26
+1 on using BB's. A shotty is fine for foxes, just make sure you're within range, no meat damage to worry about either.
Blunderbuss
no meat damage to worry about either. You eat them?
