I shall be recieving my FAC license hopefully within the next week and will be looking for a .17HMR immediatly.

I've seen a CZ Style in the local gun shop for £385, then would need a scope and bipod etc, totaling around £550 id imagen.

Does anyone know where i could look at other preferably second hand options which i could get cheaper, funds are a bit tight at the moment with the misses booking a holiday to florida for 17 days, despite me telling her i only had 6 days holiday left  Ohh well what can ya do, anything to keep her happy.

Im idealy looking to spend maybe £400 on a full setup, meaning rifle and scope, would this get me a decent setup as something to learn with?

Advice appreciated, ill also pop a post in the wanted section for 17HMR.

Thanks

I tried to do it on a shoe string and you will always end up spending more than you want. The worst thing you can do is be tight when it comes to scope and mounts, as there is nothing more annoying than missing all the time and wasting £££ on ammo re-zeroing all the time (like I did!)

Looking at £250 for gun

£40 moderator.

£100 scope.

£20 mounts.

£80 bipod

£15 sling and swivels.

£20 for gun slip.

£100 for 500 rounds

=£625.

These are the lowest prices you'll find unless you're lucky. And don't forget 500 rounds will cost you £100

You'll be best off getting a full set up second hand as some real bargains can be had!

I paid

£310 for gun with moderator (CZ varmint and Sirocco mod)

£150 for scope and mounts. (BSA Sweet 17 and BKL mounts)

£70 for 13-23" swivel bipod (Rockmount (Harris copy))

£15 for sling and swivels (very cheap!!)

£117 for 500 Hornady rounds

=£662 :)

I spent ages shopping around for the lowest possible prices, but it is worth it or you'll be spending a fortune.

Good luck :)

They don't generate enough heat usually to need the heavy barrel, unless you are doing some serious shooting!

It's just for aesthetic reasons really, but then they make American and Varmint in larger calibres where a heavy barrel may be of benefit.

It's often commented that the varmint is heavier, but there is very little difference in the short barrel varmint and the long American.
