I asked a gunsmith this once fully expecting to be pointed in the direction of the barettas. He said get an escort, use it untill it falls apart and then get an other one and you will still have change from what a baretta would have cost you. He also suggested that if you are going to treat it rough then there is no point spending a fortune on it.

The escort will do the job and be easy on your pocket, you may get a good one or you may be unlucky to get a bad one.

Be careful of older second hand auto's, not neccessarily because they are reliable but many of the older ones although a 3" chamber are not proofed for high performance steel loads. It is hampers your opportunity for choice of cartridges.

Go for a Browning, Never had any issues with mine use everything from 24g up to 62g no probs. Mine takes 3.5" cartridges and the recoil is hardly noticable, and is cheaper than a berretta, but not as cheap as a Hatsan.

Can't believe I'm going to say this (Funky will laugh), but Benelli's are good. Funky uses his in Matt black and Wood to good effect (especially now he's got it fitted to him.

Whatever gun you go for, as long as you clean and maintain it, it will work forever.

Do not know what this obsession with Semi autos for the foreshore is (Tin Hat on now). In my experience the invaluable third shot is either a miss or worse a pricked bird, mainly because by the time you have got onto the target again for a third shot it is rapidly departing out of range.

So get yourself a nice heavy 3 inch rated O/U, maybe a Laurona or similar. You will not shoot any less than you would with an auto and you will never ever have to worry about jams or elaborate extended cleaning sessions. Unlike a mate of mine you will also not have to watch the best goose flight in 40 years go directly overhead for an hour whilst trying to find several important pieces of his berreta auto which fell out and into the mud at his feet (now that was hilarious).

lower recoil, Easy to reload without having to break gun, built with harsh environments in mind, cheaper than double barrel

Money no object = 2nd hand Beretta Extrema 1 (not the 2) : the 1's are good money second hand and more pointable.

Middle of the road suggestion = 2nd hand Remmy 1100 (disposable money)

**BUT**

My killer practical suggestion would be a new synthetic Mossberg pump : not everyones cup of tea, but cheap and faultless performance - it will always work. I love the simplicity and zero servicing that pumps demand. I shoot very well with my Mossberg as well even if I do say so myself.

Also, my Remmy 1100 seems to want a new O ring every other ******* weekend and I don't like the way it loads. There is a whole industry that services the after market bits and servicing of these guns but you have to admit that Beretta make a much better semi auto :good:

As for Hatsan semi auto, nah, not for me. There's better options out there. Having learnt from my mistakes I am also reminded of "buy cheap, buy twice"

How come as soon as I get rid of mine, they become 'accpetable':good:

The above is good advice and i would say true.....

you can buy 3 hatstands for 1 berreta, and i do like berrettas but i can't see how they are worth 3 times what the escorts are in practical terms. for sure the xtrema/urika is a better looking gun, i have a friend with one and it is very nice but it doesn't kill any better than the escort.
