scolopax Posted September 1, 2014 Report Share Posted September 1, 2014 (edited) I have a 57 plate Forester and a few years ago its back end went and it now rides low at the rear, I had an 02 version previously which did exactly the same. A main dealer told me it was either one or both rear self levelling struts failing. He also said they are £700 a pop but as it was almost entirely cosmetic it was very much my choice to get them changed out. Now that is a lot of money and as the car still drives well I never bothered with the repair. But now I getting a bit sick of only being able to see the tarmac immediately behind my car in the rear view mirror. My question is does anyone know of an alternative to Subaru main dealer replacement rear struts? kent Posted September 1, 2014 Report Share Posted September 1, 2014 I just got prices, £500 parts non Scooby £1100 Scooby ones (the two might well be the same just one with shed loads of main dealer mark up). southeastpete Posted September 1, 2014 Report Share Posted September 1, 2014 I have a forester, and am on the owners forum. The peddars ones get very good reviews. They also sell them ready assembled which saves alot of time in installation, and you won't need a spring compression tool. After that you can go after market, but most others lower the car so unless you replaced them all it would be the same. Otherwise you can get saggy butt spacers, which are shins that go on top of the suspension and counter the drop of broken self levelling suspension. I have used the pedders replacements for the rear self levelling struts. They work fine. You can also use KYB struts and springs. I subsequently had the springs replaced all round with stiffer progressive springs from an outfit called Springcoil. Its not lowered at all.
