First stubble this year arrived 10.30 only to find Robert already surveying the prospect of some sport, bales still in field and not a lot of birds in the field. We watched and chatted for 20 minutes no direct flight lines but birds arriving had hock from all directions, we decided that we would split up one at top end one at bottom end of field. After struggling my nuts of I managed to push two bales together with the wind at my back and start to set up, just got all the kit out when the farmer turned up to collect the bales  . A quick word with him and I was loading my kit back up to move to the bottom hedge, by the time I was set up the first 2 trailer loads were heading off the field past Robert who was already shooting. Now the wind was from left to right and the sun would soon be in my face, not ideal but could live with it. Tom phoned to tell me that the man he had been waiting for had been out to fix his stairlift, and could now come and join me, good result as he expected not to be able to get out. 15 minutes later we were tucked up in anticipation, it started a little slow ones and twos coming close but not committing well to the L pattern of 12 dead birds on cradles and a remote controlled flapper. After an hour and 5 in the bag I put the magnet out to the left about 15 yards to pull the birds that were pulling of to the right about 55 yards out and flying off. This made things much better birds were now committing to the pattern and even landing in it. ( yes we shoot them on the ground its vermin control, in the air is sport! ) We had a steady flow of birds but it dried up for long spells from time to time. I was on strict orders from SWMBO to be home by 6 or my gonads would be removed with a rusty knife and nailed to the wall!

Started to pack up at 5.15 and Robert drove down to us to give his account of the day, he finished on 37 and said he shot very badly 53 carts, ( did'ent tell him that would have been a good result for us ) We finished on 34 picked up 3 lost over the hedge ( not telling how many carts used :whistling: ) Robert left and as we were finishing packing up I heard Tom calling for help I turned round only to see the bottom of his chair and the soles of his shoes sticking out of the hedge that had swallowed him up as he fell backwards into it leaving his hat hanging on the hawthorns, well :lol::lol: took me ages to get him out at 83 and not very agile and a brace on his leg ( and me killing myself with laughter ) luckily he was uninjured and finished the day with a good laugh. The down side came on arriving home at 6.15  but after explaining why I was late and another good laugh I was forgiven and reprieved. :good:
