Catamong
It's a Kestrel, and unlikely to have been poisoned as they don't eat carrion or eggs, they only eat small live prey, i.e. mice, voles etc. Cat
Dunkield
Can they not die from eating a poisoned mouse/small rat?
Hunter
Do not touch the bird!! Put it into a sealed plastic bag/container with ice or cooling elements, and bring it to a vet for quick examination.. could be bird flu, or another virus/poisen. Just be very careful with handling it, you must not touch or breathe in vapours from the bird. If you have touched it, you need to clean your hands and clothes very well. Catamong
Can they not die from eating a poisoned mouse/small rat? Stuart, I think you'll find that they don't eat dead animals, therefore poisoning is most unlikely. My guess is that it's been shot, hit with a single pellet, flown into a tree and later died. Or, perhaps it died from Bird Flu..?? Cat.
Axe
I dont know enough about the bird and its eating habbits, but to be sure, a trip to the vet sounds like a good move to me.
Dunkield
I would get it checked out and if it all looks OK get it stuffed. My mate found an Owl in the raod and had that done it looks great. As an aside we killed 7 rats yesterday (well our dogs did) and left them on top of the straw bails, my missus went back this morning and they have all gone, I have seen 6 Kites working this field before now so I suspect they have taken them, unless someone is going to say it was the other rats or a fox. . . al4x
If its on ground you shoot on I would burn it on a hot fire, this is for a few reasons if its bird Flu it will destroy it and save anything else eating it or coming into contact with it. If it has been poisoned it stops lots of questions being asked about local shooters and landowners when it may be nothing to do with anyone in your area. The same applies to if its been shot questions may be asked and the landowner may even get enough hastle to stop people shooting on the land. The other reason to burn is if it happens to have been tagged with a radio transmitter that some birds of prey are it destroys them so no one finds the carcass
Fisherman Mike
It's a Kestrel, and unlikely to have been poisoned as they don't eat carrion or eggs, they only eat small live prey, i.e. mice, voles etc. Cat Sorry mate I think its a Common Buzzard. Too small to be a Kes and doesnt appear to have the yellow rim to the eye. Could just be natural causes... they do die from time to time particularly in hard weather. FM. Ps if it is a Buzzard they do indeed eat carrion. PPs can you confirm rough dimensions of the bird konings ?
